New York's attorney general has reached a deal with two cryptocurrency trading platforms to shut down all business in the state and pay nearly $20 million in damages after the two firms hid hundreds of millions in losses. A statement from the office of Letitia James (D) on Wednesday said that the cryptocurrency platforms Bitfinex and Tether would be forced to end all transactions with New York residents and pay a combined $18.5 million in fines after hiding roughly $850 million in losses around the world. The two companies offered a service referred to as "stablecoins," or cryptocurrency backed by a set U.S. dollar value. James said in her press release that the companies' claims of a guaranteed set value for the stablecoins was fraudulent. ADVERTISEMENT “Bitfinex and Tether recklessly and unlawfully covered-up massive financial losses to keep their scheme going and protect their bottom lines,” she said. “Tether’s claims that its virtual currency was fully backed by … [Read more...] about New York shutting down cryptocurrency trading platforms that hid millions in losses

NRA accuses New York attorney general of ‘weaponizing’ power in new lawsuit
The National Rifle Association (NRA) in a new lawsuit is accusing New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) of “weaponizing” her power against the group. The NRA filed a counter lawsuit against James in the New York State Supreme Court on Tuesday accusing James of seeking to dissolve the group for political purposes. The counter complaint was first reported by Reuters . “Even before assuming office, and without a shred of evidence that the NRA had done anything wrong, Attorney General James vowed to weaponize the supervisory powers of the NYAG to destroy one of the nation’s oldest, largest civil rights organizations,” the complaint reads. ADVERTISEMENT “Her impetus was nakedly political: to weaken the NRA as a political force in advance of the 2020 elections,” the complaint says. James sued in August 2020 to dissolve the gun rights group after an 18-month investigation found that the group and some of its officials diverted millions of dollars … [Read more...] about NRA accuses New York attorney general of ‘weaponizing’ power in new lawsuit
Broadway Unions Urge New York State Renewal Of COBRA Subsidies
The Coalition of Broadway Unions & Guilds is calling for health care relief in the upcoming New York State budget, specifically urging for the updating and renewal of the state’s COBRA subsidy program. “Securing health care relief is a top priority for the Broadway Unions and Guilds,” said COBUG Co-Chairs Joe Hartnett, Co-Director, Stagecraft Department, IATSE and Laura Penn, Executive Director, SDC. “Theatre workers are suffering. Almost all lost their jobs last spring, which means they’ve also lost health care for themselves and their families. Health care relief must be included in the upcoming New York State budget.” COBUG is made up of 18 unions representing workers both on and off stage in and outside New York State. “We must proactively support arts and entertainment workers with COBRA subsidies in order to make certain that these workers are here, and healthy, when our industry is ready to re-open,” Hartnett and Penn continued. New York’s current COBRA … [Read more...] about Broadway Unions Urge New York State Renewal Of COBRA Subsidies
HART: Dems Fund Liberal Pork Wish List In $1.9 Trillion Supposed ‘COVID Relief’ Bill
Famously summed up early in Obama’s administration by his Chicago hatchet man Rahm “Dead Fish” Emanuel, who said, “Never let a crisis go to waste,” Dems are borrowing a page from Obama’s playbook to frantically push their “COVID Relief Bill.” Once Dems got the checkbook, the only way to kill this pork-laden spending bill would have been for their resident COVID expert, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, to send it to a New York nursing home. The Wall Street Journal examined the bill and concluded that — best case — $825 billion of the $1.9 TRILLION in spending that Democrats call “COVID” relief is actually for COVID-19 relief. The rest is blue, poorly-run, Democrat state and city bailout money that can be spent to get Dems elected in 2022. Remember Obama’s “shovel ready jobs” bill? We got nothing, and friends of the left got money in their coffers. And remember when Trump wanted such a bill and Pelosi refused? It was sickening to watch Democrat senators slap themselves on the back for spending … [Read more...] about HART: Dems Fund Liberal Pork Wish List In $1.9 Trillion Supposed ‘COVID Relief’ Bill
Auckland woman ‘left in limbo’ by delays to $100 million apartment complex
A woman is still waiting to move into an apartment she bought off the plans, two years on from when it was supposed to be completed. Johanna McIntosh said her whole life has been put on hold by delays to the NXN Kingsland housing development in Kingsland, central Auckland. But developer Templeton Group disputes the length of the delays and said the Covid-19 pandemic is to blame. RNZ Judith Collins says more tradespeople should be let into New Zealand to help build more houses and ease supply and demand troubles. NXN Kingsland consists of 73 apartments and five terraced houses and is valued at $100 million.
