When Chevy let us take a little ride in the Spark, they really drove home one point: This is a car for young people that don't normally buy cars. Advertisement Now, there's an electric version on the way. Presumably for young, environmentally conscious people that don't buy cars. At least it's affordable. The all electric Spark EV will sell for about $25,000, after tax breaks, when it goes on sale next summer. There are no range numbers yet, but it is supposed to be among the "best in the segment," which presumably means around 100 miles like the Nissan Leaf. The Spark EV will also have a fast charging capability that will get it to 80 percent charge in just 20 minutes. That's pretty good. Under the hood is an electric motor with 130 horsepower and 400 pound feet of torque. 400 POUND FEET OF TORQUE. To put that in perspective, the gas powered Spark has 84 horsepower and 83 pound feet of torque. That equals 0-60 in less than eight seconds. Like holy crap. I saw an article recently documenting how Tesloop, a Southern California car shuttle service that only operates Teslas, has some of the highest-mileage Teslas in the world, with many having over 300,000 miles on the clock. The important part here, though, is that maintenance-wise, the cars are doing fantastic, way better than a combustion car with similar mileage. Mechanically, any electric car—not just Teslas—should be equally long-lived. That’s precisely why in order for electric carmakers to thrive, they need to do what the Communists did. Specifically, the Czech commies. Even more specifically, they need to look at how Tatra, a Czech maker of trucks (today) and luxury cars for Communist party bigwigs (the past) dealt with their cars that had been in service for a long time: they took them back to the factory and rebuilt them. Advertisement Here’s the thinking: electric car drivetrains are incredibly simple and robust, especially when compared to a … [Read more...] about The Only Way For Long-Term Electric Car Sales To Work Is To Do What The Communists Did
The Trump administration is considering slapping auto tariffs on imported vehicles and parts. That means consumers in the market for a new car might want to buy those wheels sooner than later, experts say. Depending on the model, prices for some popular vehicles could jump as much as $7,000 if tariffs under consideration are enacted, estimates show. Meanwhile, although it may be months before Mr. Trump decides on if, when and how to impose auto tariffs, prices are still likely to climb soon because of other factors. That's because interest rates for auto loans are rising along with broader U.S. borrowing rates, and a recent dip in sales could force automakers facing higher costs to push up list prices to preserve profit margins. In the short term, the immediate threat seems to have abated after President Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday said they were working to eliminate all tariffs between the trading partners. But success in hammering … [Read more...] about As auto tariffs loom, is now the time to buy a new car?
