Mexico deports scores of Central American migrants

· November 27, 2018 ·

TIJUANA, Mexico: Mexico deported scores of Central American migrants arrested after hundreds forced their way through a Mexican police blockade and headed for the United States but were met with tear gas and rubber bullets. Around 500 men, women and children, part of a caravan of roughly 5,000 mainly Hondurans who have been trekking towards the US for weeks, scrambled over a rusted metal fence and surged into a concrete riverbed towards San Diego on Sunday. The group was stopped by a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire and US Border Patrol agents firing tear gas and rubber bullets. At least one man was wounded. Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott, of the San Diego Sector Border Patrol, told CNN "numerous" migrants - mainly men - had made it across, however, and 42 of them were arrested. Mexico's National Institute of Migration Commissioner Gerardo Garcia confirmed the 98 arrests on his country's side, saying there were "instigators" in the migrant caravan pushing people to … [Read more...] about Mexico deports scores of Central American migrants

Newly elected Native American vows climate change fight

· November 9, 2018 ·

WASHINGTON: New Mexico Democrat Deb Haaland, who became one of the first Native American women elected to the US Congress this week, says she plans to make the fight for renewable energy a top priority. A 57-year-old member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, Haaland insists that indigenous rights are inextricably linked to climate change - and vows to fight for "tribal nations ... battling the fossil fuel industry in their backyards." In an interview via email, Haaland recalled that two years ago she was at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, protesting along with Sioux tribal nations the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The protesters were concerned about the pipeline's impact on sacred tribal sites as well as the environment. "Now, I'm going to take that fight for 100 per cent renewable energy to Congress," Haaland said. "I would like to make New Mexico a global leader in renewable energy, not only to fight climate change but because it can provide jobs for … [Read more...] about Newly elected Native American vows climate change fight

Beto O’Rourke: Republican Party Is a ‘Cult of Death’ — They ‘Literally Want to Sacrifice’ Lives

· March 3, 2021 ·

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D) said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” the Republican Party  is a “cult of death.” Discussing Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) lifting the COVID-19 mask mandate, anchor Nicolle Wallace said, “It sounds like it isn’t going to work on the science side. There’s a lot of skepticism in Texas that it’s not going to work on the economic side as well. Why is he doing it?” O’Rourke said, “They literally want to sacrifice the lives of our fellow Texans, for I don’t know, for political gain? To satisfy certain powerful interests within the state? This isn’t hyperbole. You heard our lieutenant governor, arguably one of the most powerful positions in the state of Texas, say on Fox News at the beginning of the pandemic, we are willing to died. Old people are willing to sacrifice their lives in order for the economy to reopen. It won’t be just any older Texans who die. We know disproportionately it will be black and brown Texans who do. You heard our former Governor Rick … [Read more...] about Beto O’Rourke: Republican Party Is a ‘Cult of Death’ — They ‘Literally Want to Sacrifice’ Lives

Mexico allows caravan women and children in, but thousands still stranded

· October 21, 2018 ·

CIUDAD HIDALGO, Mexico: Mexican authorities allowed dozens of women and children from a US-bound Honduran migrant caravan to enter the country on Saturday (Oct 20) but thousands remain stranded on a border bridge between Guatemala and Mexico where riot police barred their progress. Mexico's ambassador to Guatemala Luis Manuel Lopez told AFP the women and children would be processed by immigration authorities and taken to a shelter in the city of Tapachula, 40 kilometres away. Hundreds of others - tired of waiting on the bridge - resorted to crossing the Suchiate River below on makeshift rafts and police did not intervene as they clambered up the muddy riverbank on the Mexican side. Many of them had spent more than 24 hours on the packed bridge where heat and hunger was adding to a growing sense of despair. 'POLITICALLY MOTIVATED' US President Donald Trump, speaking at a rally in Elko, Nevada, kept up his rhetoric against the migrants and suggested the caravan was … [Read more...] about Mexico allows caravan women and children in, but thousands still stranded
