Argentina abortion bill heads to Congress vote as protests build

· December 10, 2020 ·

BUENOS AIRES: A bill to legalise abortion in Argentina, which is being pushed by center-left President Alberto Fernandez, is set to be debated in the lower house of Congress on Thursday amid widespread protests for and against the law. The legislation, which would provide for the legal termination of pregnancy up until the 14th week, could set the tone elsewhere in predominantly Roman Catholic Latin America, with a number of countries seeing drives to give women greater reproductive rights. The draft law is expected to be narrowly approved by congressional deputies before moving up to the Senate, where an even tighter vote is anticipated. The South American country is the birthplace of Pope Francis, and most people are nominally Catholic. A spokesman for the ruling party told Reuters a debate of almost 30 hours was expected in the lower house, meaning that the bill - which could undergo modifications to achieve broad consensus - would be likely to face a vote on Friday morning. … [Read more...] about Argentina abortion bill heads to Congress vote as protests build

Commentary: Finally, some good news about Brexit

· April 3, 2019 ·

LONDON: There is some good news about Brexit. The magic eye picture of Britain’s policy is beginning to emerge from the random pixels of the referendum campaign’s promises and threats to a shadowy image of compromise. But there are three problems: Parliament is looking at the picture from a different angle to the government; the picture is still more of a blur than a portrait; and time is running out fast. FLOORSHOW ON MONDAY In parliament on Monday (Apr 1), the speaker – in the face of some criticism from Brexiteers – made the day’s proceedings a floorshow for the resistance. MPs were to undertake a second round of indicative votes to show which options they would support. Conservative backbencher Kenneth Clarke sought a customs union; his colleague Nick Boles proposed the “Common Market 2.0”, which effectively amounted to staying in the single market. Two more options proposed another referendum and stopping the whole Brexit process if there is no deal. All four options … [Read more...] about Commentary: Finally, some good news about Brexit

‘Was it Worth it?’: Hungary Chides EU For Intransigence That Led to Brexit

· February 27, 2021 ·

European elites that mourn the loss of Britain — and the nation’s significant financial contributions — from the bloc have themselves to blame, Hungarian leader Viktor Orban has said in a wide-ranging interview with the German press. While the British people voted to leave the European Union, it was the Eurocrats in Brussels steering the project whose choices had left the British feeling they had no choice but to go their own way, Orban said. Responding to a question by a journalist from German magazine FOCUS , asking him to elaborate on historic comments he made saying that Brexit could have been avoided , the Hungarian Prime Minister was clear that while the European Union could probably get away with pushing around less powerful nations, a leading state like the UK would inevitably decide to do something about it. UK PM Johnson’s adviser Cummings to resign when Brexit is done

· November 13, 2020 ·

LONDON: Dominic Cummings, one of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's most influential advisers, will leave his position at the heart of Downing Street when Brexit is done at year-end, after an internal battle over who should be Johnson's chief of staff. Cummings, who masterminded the 2016 Brexit referendum vote and Johnson's 2019 landslide election bid, told the BBC that his position had not changed since January when he said he wanted to be largely redundant by the end of this year. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky that Cummings had planned not to stay in his position as Johnson's senior adviser for much more than a year, once Britain left informal membership of the European Union. READ: Still no clarity from UK to assess financial market access, says EU "As he wrote right at the beginning of the year in his own words, he planned to make himself largely redundant this year with the big thing that he'd worked on, of course, which was Brexit coming to an end at … [Read more...] about UK PM Johnson’s adviser Cummings to resign when Brexit is done

Commentary: How the UK is playing dirty in Brexit talks

· September 15, 2020 ·

YORK, England: The UK government seems to be doubling down on threats to leave the European Union without a deal unless the EU gives in on issues of state aid and fisheries. These two concerns are as important in Brussels as they seem to be in London. In the latest attempt to ramp up the drama as the deadline to reach an agreement nears, the UK has said it plans to revisit the withdrawal agreement it has already signed with the EU on the terms of departure. This will include changing the plan agreed with the EU in December 2019 on how trade will move between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. It also sets out how much money the UK owes the EU in unpaid commitments.
