Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders , the first Black leader of Canada’s largest municipal police service, is resigning July 31 — a surprise move that comes with eight months left in his contract and amid growing calls for police reform locally and across North America. Monday’s sudden announcement, which has stunned both rank and file and higher-ups in his own force, comes at a time of upheaval for Saunders’ profession. Just three days ago, Saunders — an officer of 37 years, all of them in Toronto — took a knee as a sign of solidarity with protesters decrying police use of force against Black citizens and amid growing calls to “ defund” police organizations . By then, he knew he was leaving. Days before, Saunders had advised the Toronto police board and Mayor John Tory that he was stepping down early — despite the civilian police board last summer extending his contract into a sixth year, to April 2021, so he could continue his central task of modernizing the force. China Is ‘Our Customer’: Mark Cuban ‘OK’ Doing Business with China Despite Human Rights Violations
Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban claimed to condemn human rights abuses wherever they occur. Still, despite that China is one of the biggest abusers of human rights in the world, Cuban says he is “OK doing business with China.” Cuban made his proclamation on a podcast with former Fox News host Megyn Kelly on Monday where he said he claims to stand against human right abuses, even those in China, The Hill reported. Kelly asked why he and the NBA claim to stand for human rights, but then seem to ignore the vast abuses perpetrated by their business partner, China. “I personally put a priority on domestic issues. I’m against human rights violations around the world,” Cuban said, attempting to deflect from the question. “Including the ones in China?” Kelly replied. Cuban continued to try to deflect, saying, “China is not the only country with human rights violations.” But Kelly pressed him on whether he condemns the abuses perpetrated by the Chinese. “Yes, including … [Read more...] about China Is ‘Our Customer’: Mark Cuban ‘OK’ Doing Business with China Despite Human Rights Violations
Queue markings at markets part of new COVID-19 safe distancing measures: NEA
SINGAPORE: As stricter safe distancing guidelines are rolled out in Singapore, the National Environment Agency (NEA) and town councils are putting in place more of such measures at markets. In a press release on Wednesday (Apr 1), the agency said that queue markings to guide customers to maintain a safe distance will be put at 83 markets managed by NEA or NEA-appointed operators. "While markets are a naturally ventilated environment where crowd interactions are fairly transient, patrons are still encouraged to maintain safe distancing, especially when taking turns to make their purchases," NEA said. Patrons are also advised to stand within the boxes marked to help minimise crowding at each stall at any point of time, the agency added. BRUSSELS: Europe's top court on Thursday backed Amazon in its dispute with the German unit of U.S. cosmetics company Coty's, saying the online retail giant is not liable for unwittingly stocking trade mark infringing goods for third-party sellers. "The mere storage by Amazon, in the context of its online marketplace (Amazon-Marketplace), of goods which infringe trade mark rights does not constitute an infringement by Amazon of those trade mark rights," the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union said.
