US existing home sales fall more than expected in November

· December 22, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: US home sales fell more than expected in November after five straight month of gains amid a shortage of properties and more expensive houses, but the housing market remains underpinned by record low mortgage rates. The National Association of Realtors said on Tuesday that existing home sales fell 2.5 per cent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 6.69 million units last month. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales declining 1.0 per cent to a rate of 6.70 million units in November. Existing home sales, which account for the bulk of US home sales, surged 25.8 per cent on a year-on-year basis in November. Sales fell in the South, Midwest and Northeast. They were flat in the West. The housing market has been the economy's star performer, thanks to pent-up demand and historically low mortgage rates. The COVID-19 pandemic has left 21.8 per cent of the labour force working from home. That has led to a migration from city centres to suburbs and other … [Read more...] about US existing home sales fall more than expected in November

Hundreds line up to vote in Georgia elections that will set control of US Senate

· December 15, 2020 ·

MARIETTA, Georgia: Hundreds of people lined up in a cold rain on Monday (Dec 14) to cast ballots in a pair of US Senate races in Georgia that will determine control of the chamber and heavily influence Democratic President-elect Joe Biden's ability to enact his agenda. Election experts said turnout on the first day of early voting in a contest that ends on Jan 5 could offer clues to which side ultimately prevails: Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, or their respective Democratic challengers: Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. "On the first day of early voting during the general election, there were people lined up long before the polls opened. If we see something like that, I think that would bode well for the Democrats," said Michael McDonald, a University of Florida political science professor who administers the US Elections Project. Each side has made the race about Senate control and the success of Biden's priorities, with Republicans warning voters that … [Read more...] about Hundreds line up to vote in Georgia elections that will set control of US Senate
