Tuesday’s verdict by the Court of Justice of the European Union said the final decision in such cases rested with a Polish court. The ruling underlines the ongoing rift between the EU institutions and the Polish government over rule of law. But critics say the way judges are appointed has become a tool to politicize the judiciary. Poland is in a long-running row with the EU over reforms that the bloc says hurt court independence by increasing political control over judges. The nationalist Law and Justice party (PiS) says the reforms are necessary to make courts more efficient. What did the court say? Isis bride Shamima Begum left ‘angry, upset and crying’ after court blocks UK return
Shamima Begum has been left "angry, upset and crying" after a court ruled she could not return to Britain to fight a citizenship battle, friends said. The ISIS bride is now stuck in a detention camp in Syria after the Supreme Court unanimously turned down her request to come back to Britain yesterday. Ms Begum left east London with two friends when she was aged 15 to join the terror group, which led to her British citizenship being revoked on grounds of national security. Myanmar’s Suu Kyi appears at court hearing via video conferencing, faces new charge
New Delhi: Myanmar`s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in good health at a court hearing via video conferencing on Monday, during which an additional charge was added to those filed against her after a coup a month ago, a lawyer for her said. Lawyer Min Min Soe told Reuters Suu Kyi had requested to see her legal team during the hearing via video link. The additional charge is from the country’s colonial-era penal code, which prohibits publishing information that may "cause fear or alarm". According to Reuters reports, Suu Kyi looked healthy as she took part in a court hearing via video conferencing in the capital, Naypyitaw. The leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) has not been seen in public since her government was ousted in a February 1 military coup and she was detained along with other party leaders. The Duchess of Sussex wants the Mail On Sunday to hand over any copies of her letter to her father - and publish a front-page statement and put a notice on MailOnline for at least six months. Meghan won her privacy case last month after a judge said the paper had breached her privacy and copyright by publishing parts of the letter . Her lawyers are also seeking £1.5m from the Mail On Sunday to cover their legal fees, with half to be paid within two weeks. The new details emerged today in a hearing over costs and other unresolved matters. The duchess's lawyers want the Mail to publish statements to say she has won her case, with an online notice staying on the MailOnline homepage for "not less than 6 months". Thai court approves arrest warrant for activist accused of burning king’s portrait
BANGKOK: A Thai criminal court on Tuesday (Mar 2) approved an arrest warrant for an anti-government activist accused of burning a portrait of the country's king over the weekend. Police said activist Chaiamorn Kaewwiboonpan was responsible for setting fire to a portrait of King Maha Vajiralongkorn in front of a prison in Bangkok on Saturday. Chaiamorn faced charges of insulting the king under Thailand's tough lese majeste law, an offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison, arson and trespassing on government sites, police said. "The court has approved the warrant for Chaiamorn," Piya Tavichai, deputy head of Bangkok police, told Reuters. Chaiamorn could not immediately be reached for comment.
