Bharat Bandh today: Day-long strike evokes lukewarm response, here’s what all was affected

· February 26, 2021 ·

The day-long 'Bharat Vyapar Bandh' called by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) evoked a lukewarm response with most shops and commercial establishments open through the day. The traders' body, however, claimed that shopkeepers supported its nationwide business shutdown call to protest against issues related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and "unethical business practices of foreign e-commerce companies". Delhi: Various markets in the national capital were open on Friday during the Bandh with many saying that despite supporting the cause, they did not want to suffer another day of losses. However, CAIT in a statement said the shutdown was a "grand success" as more than 8 crore small businesses belonging to about 40,000 trade associations across the country kept their shutters down and no trading activity took place in any commercial market. Brijesh Goyal, president of the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), said most of the markets in Delhi were open but … [Read more...] about Bharat Bandh today: Day-long strike evokes lukewarm response, here’s what all was affected

Mum ‘disgusted’ after daughter, 10, sent ‘inappropriately sexual’ work from school

· February 26, 2021 ·

A mum was left "disgusted" after her 10-year-old daughter was sent home-schooling work that included "inappropriately sexual" phrases. Annette Farrington, 27, from Fazakerley, Liverpool, was home-schooling her daughter when she noticed the worrying material. The English homework included phrases such as "She fondled", "I stroked", and "She felt his". Annette said: "She got the homework just before half-term but because there was so much we had some left over so we were doing it yesterday. "She was doing work on the Holocaust, and I think it had got mixed up with that. "When I was looking at it I thought that doesn't even make sense, why it would be there? "But after speaking to the school they said it was part of an English lesson giving examples to help kids make their own story." Printed on one of the English worksheets for her daughter were short sentences describing how somebody may feel. Under the header "How do I feel?" examples were listed, including "When I … [Read more...] about Mum ‘disgusted’ after daughter, 10, sent ‘inappropriately sexual’ work from school

Facebook ‘unfriends’ Australia: uproar as news pages go dark

· February 18, 2021 ·

SYDNEY: Facebook faced backlash from publishers and politicians on Thursday after blocking news feeds in Australia in a surprise escalation of a dispute with the government over a law to require it to share revenue from news. Facebook wiped out pages from Australian state governments and charities as well as from domestic and international news organisations, three days before the launch of a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination programme. Though the measure was limited to Australia, European publishers along with British and Canadian politicians described it as an attempt to put pressure on governments that might consider similar measures. "Facebook's actions to unfriend Australia today, cutting off essential information services on health and emergency services, were as arrogant as they were disappointing," Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison wrote on his own Facebook page. "These actions will only confirm the concerns that an increasing number of countries are … [Read more...] about Facebook ‘unfriends’ Australia: uproar as news pages go dark

GameStop jumps nearly 19%; ‘meme stocks’ fade after another wild ride

· February 26, 2021 ·

GameStop Corp shares rallied, finishing with double-digit gains despite a sharp retreat from session highs and leading a surprise resurgence of so-called "stonks" championed online by passionate retail investors. GameStop shares , which doubled their value on Wednesday, hit $160 at Thursday's open before being halted after several minutes of trading and fell to around $129 before the second halt. The stock closed for the day at $108.73 for an 18.5% gain, after soaring almost 90% at the session peak. Other "stonks" or "meme stocks" popular on sites such as Reddit 's WallStreetBets also saw their rallies fade. Headphone company Koss Corp closed up 16.8% gain after rocketing nearly 61% during the session. AMC Entertainment ended down nearly 9% after jumping more than 15% during the session. Analysts were puzzled by the rally that came even as the benchmark S&P dropped 2.4%.
