KOLKATA: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has issued the work order to replace the existing sodium vapour street lights with LED ones in Salt Lake and Rajarhat . The state government has sanctioned Rs 17 crore for the project. “We have received the sanction. We started work from the lane beside Poura Bhavan,” said Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation board of administrators chairperson Krishna Chakraborty. Residents have been complaining for long that there are many stretches in the township that are inadequately lit and turn dark after sunset. There are also many defunct street lights on several stretches in Salt Lake and in areas of Baguiati and Rajarhat Gopalpur. At present, there are about 25,000 sodium vapour lights across Salt Lake and adjacent areas that will be replaced with LED lights, a civic official said. The KTCDA had rejected BBMP ’s proposal for building a train track, a train station, a library and allied works in Mathikere Lake The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) appears to have made up its mind to build a toy train facility and vintage-style railway station in JP Park. Despite the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority (KTCDA) rejecting the BBMP Lakes’ Department’s proposal of constructing these facilities, the civic body has gone ahead with the project by handing over the work to the divisional office in Rajarajeshwari Nagar ( RR Nagar ). People living near Taranaki’s Lake Ratapiko have lodged complaints about jetskiers playing fast and loose with maritime rules on the waterway. Maritime NZ (MNZ) central region deputy compliance manager Blair Simmons​ said the organisation was investigating four incidents at Lake Ratapiko, 35km south of New Plymouth, and would decide on appropriate follow-up action once the process was complete. MNZ, which has jurisdiction over all craft on New Zealand lakes, works with the Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) to ensure safety on the water. Simmons said the most common complaint nationally was jet skiers speeding too close to the shore. The total phosphorus concentration decreased to 0.06 mg per liter last year at the lake in central China's Hunan Province, down 17.8 percent from 2017, according to the provincial department of ecology and environment. Hunan's water environment improved in 2020, with 93.3 percent of key river sections boasting good or excellent water quality, up 5 percentage points from 2017, according to the department, adding that air quality in the province has also improved.
