India´s sword-wielding Sikh warriors guard protesting farmers

· March 5, 2021 ·

In an electric-blue robe, foot-high turban, and wielding an antiquated sword and a walkie-talkie, Amar Singh patrols a maze of tents and tractors on a blocked highway leading into New Delhi. Singh is among hundreds of armed men from the Sikh warrior order of Nihang, the self-appointed first line of defence in a showdown between farmers and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi´s government. Tens of thousands of farmers — mostly from the Sikh-dominated Punjab state — have camped at three protest sites on the capital´s outskirts since November 26, when police blocked their entry into Delhi following clashes. The protesters say they will not budge until the government repeals the three farm laws deregulating their sector, which they believe will destroy their livelihoods. The farmers´ protests have been one of the biggest challenges. Singh, 32-year-old ´Major´ in the ´army´ of the Khalsa — followers of Sikhism who have undergone a sacred ceremony — oversees safety and security at … [Read more...] about India´s sword-wielding Sikh warriors guard protesting farmers

Blues rally for 3-2 win over Kings on Hoffman’s goal in OT

· March 5, 2021 ·

LOS ANGELES - Mike Hoffman made plays on both ends of the ice to help the St. Louis Blues extend their winning streak to three games. The centre scored 90 seconds into overtime Friday night to give the Blues a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Late in regulation, Hoffman chased down the puck in the defensive zone with the goalie pulled. St. Louis ended up converting with the extra skater as David Perron scored the tying goal. “That’s a huge play by him,“ Blues coach Craig Berube said of Hoffman’s save. “He then made another nice play in the offensive zone.” Hoffman was able to beat Los Angeles’ Anze Kopitar to the puck to prevent an empty-net goal. Perron got a pass from Ryan O’Reilly in the neutral zone and skated into the offensive zone before firing a snap shot past Cal Petersen with 44 seconds remaining in regulation for his second goal of the game. It was an NHL-leading seventh goal for St. Louis when it is playing 6-on-5. “Obviously, backchecking is key there. I … [Read more...] about Blues rally for 3-2 win over Kings on Hoffman’s goal in OT

As gas prices soar, Americans can blame Joe Biden

· March 5, 2021 ·

President Biden is already boosting oil prices, and he’s barely gotten started. Biden is frantic to help Americans hard-hit by COVID-19, or so he says. But while his $1.9 trillion “American Rescue Plan” would send cash to millions, much of that windfall may go to pay for higher gasoline and home heating prices. Americans should blame Biden, but not for the reason you might think. Biden’s attack on U.S. energy producers, starting with his freeze on federal oil and gas leases, will assuredly take a toll on output down the road and cause prices at the pump to rise. ADVERTISEMENT But today, Biden has pushed those prices, which were already rising because of severe weather, even higher by gratuitously alienating Saudi Arabia. The Gulf kingdom just surprised energy markets by announcing it would not raise oil output , despite developing supply constraints and rising prices. Oil prices jumped on the news, popping 4 percent to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in a year; … [Read more...] about As gas prices soar, Americans can blame Joe Biden
