Football: We won’t defend title, we will attack next one, says Klopp
LONDON: Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side will be the hunted rather than the hunters next season but he says they will not be defending their Premier League title, rather attacking the next one. Manchester City became the first Premier League team to win successive Premier League titles for a decade last season, proof of the competitive nature of England's top-flight. Liverpool will be given a guard of honour by City's players when the top two sides meet at the Etihad on Thursday. While accepting the gesture, Klopp knows City, together with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, will come back stronger next year to challenge Liverpool's superiority. "We will not defend the title next year, we will attack the next one," the German told a virtual news conference. "We feel we are in the middle of something not at the end of something. It will be the end of something when we finish our careers, that's the end of this period. "When you think you have reached the pinnacle, … [Read more...] about Football: We won’t defend title, we will attack next one, says Klopp
Liverpool don’t need to spend heavily to improve: Klopp
REUTERS: Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp says he does not expect to spend heavily in the transfer window ahead of next season and sees a bright future for several youngsters looking to break into a strong main squad. The Premier League champions had looked favourites to sign German striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig before the 24-year-old opted for Chelsea. Klopp said the upcoming transfer window was likely to be more subdued than in previous years due to the impact of COVID-19 on clubs' finances. "COVID has influenced both sides with ins and outs, that is completely normal, and it's just not likely that it'll be the most busy summer in the world," he told reporters. "We can't spend millions and millions because we want to, or we think it's nice to do. We never wanted that. "The problem with a strong squad is how do you improve a strong squad in the transfer market?" Klopp added. "You have to be creative... We try to find solutions internally and there's still a lot to … [Read more...] about Liverpool don’t need to spend heavily to improve: Klopp
Liverpool’s history not a burden anymore, says Klopp
REUTERS: Liverpool are no longer burdened by their painful 30-year title drought and have written a new chapter in the club's history after they were confirmed as Premier League champions, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday (Jun 26). The Anfield club, who dominated English soccer in the 1970s and 1980s, last won the old First Division title in 1990, but have finished as runners-up five times since. Seven different managers have tried and failed to recapture Liverpool's long-lost domestic glory before Klopp arrived at Anfield in 2015 to - in his own words - turn the Merseyside club from "doubters into believers". "Without knowing it at the time, that was probably the most important thing I said to my players, that we have to create our own stories and history," Klopp told Sky Sports. "Meanwhile, the history is no burden anymore. The history is now our wonderful background, it's the basis for what we are doing. "When I came in we had to say, 'Don't compare us anymore with … [Read more...] about Liverpool’s history not a burden anymore, says Klopp
Football: Liverpool’s Klopp praises ‘world-class’ Alisson after Everton draw
REUTERS: Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp hailed his "world class" goalkeeper Alisson after the Brazilian produced a superb late save in the 0-0 draw at Everton on Sunday. With 10 minutes left Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin's clever flick from a low Gylfi Sigurdsson cross was pushed out by Alisson and Tom Davies' follow-up shot hit the post. "That's what a world-class goalkeeper is, nothing to do for 90 minutes pretty much and then in one second you have to be there and he was there," Klopp told reporters. "It obviously saved us a point - it wasn't the first one. "... Outstanding. A difficult goalkeeper game." Liverpool need five more points to be sure of their first title of the Premier League era. They face Crystal Palace on Wednesday. Klopp said defender Andy Robertson, who was left out of the squad against Everton due to a minor knock, would be involved. Liverpool will also assess James Milner and Joel Matip after the pair sustained injuries against Everton. … [Read more...] about Football: Liverpool’s Klopp praises ‘world-class’ Alisson after Everton draw
