Joe Biden’s Support of Filibuster Complicates Push for New Voting Rights Act
President Joe Biden faces a quandary: how to pair his support of the filibuster and his support for a new voting rights act that would expand access to the ballot and curb restrictions imposed at the state level. When the voting rights act named after the late Rep. John Lewis passed the House of Representatives in a 220 to 210 vote on Thursday last week, Democrats began to fear that the Senate GOP would block the bill with the filibuster. Under the filibuster rule, at least 60 senators have to vote in favor of ending debate on a bill, a process know as cloture. If a minority group of at least 41 senators refuses to vote for debate on a bill to end, they can effectively block it indefinitely. Democrats only control 51 votes in the upper chamber, meaning they would need Republican support to pass the voting rights act through the upper chamber, or at least agree not to filibuster the legislation. Both of those outcomes look highly unlikely. In January, more than 106 … [Read more...] about Joe Biden’s Support of Filibuster Complicates Push for New Voting Rights Act
White House: Joe Biden Opposes Bipartisan Effort to Protect Women’s Sports
President Joe Biden opposes a proposal earning bipartisan support to protect women’s sports, the White House confirmed Monday. The Senate voted Saturday on an amendment proposed by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) to the $1.9 trillion coronavirus spending bill to defund schools allowing biological male athletes to compete against women in school sports. The amendment failed 49 – 50 but earned the support of Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin (WV). White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said President Biden opposed the amendment during the White House press briefing Monday afternoon. “He believes transgender rights are human rights and wants to see kids have the opportunity to play sports and participate in a range of activities,” she said. Psaki also noted she and other White House staff were wearing purple to recognize International Women’s Day as she promoted President Biden’s plan to sign an executive order creating a White House Gender Policy Council. IND vs ENG: England Cricket’s Leadership Power Lies With Eoin Morgan Not Joe Root, So he Gets What he Wants, Says Michael Vaughan
Former captain Michael Vaughan argued that England Test skipper Joe Root should also get to pick his best players irrespective of ECB’s rotation policy, just like limited-overs leader Eoin Morgan ‘gets what he wants’. Vaughan mentioned in his column in Telegraph that England fielded a weakened team in the four Tests against India with the likes of Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali returning home in the middle of the series only to be back for the limited-overs leg of the tour. “It is very clear where the leadership power lies in English cricket – it is with Eoin Morgan and not Joe Root. “I am pretty sure that Morgan went to the selectors and Ashley Giles and said he wanted his best team at all times this year in Twenty20, so he could build for the World Cup in India in October. He has his wish,” the Ashes-winning skipper wrote. India won the series 3-1 to qualify for the World Test Championship final. “I understand rotation. Nobody argues against the fact players need breaks from Covid … [Read more...] about IND vs ENG: England Cricket’s Leadership Power Lies With Eoin Morgan Not Joe Root, So he Gets What he Wants, Says Michael Vaughan
Joe Biden Marks International Women’s Day with White House Council on Gender Policy
President Joe Biden will sign two more executive orders on Monday to mark International Women’s Day with a focus on “gender equality.” The president will sign an order to establish a “Gender Policy Council” in the White House to help focus on gender issues such as sexual harassment, equal pay for other genders, ways to combat “gender-based violence,” and “gender equality” issues across the world. In 2019, former President Barack Obama created a White House Council on Women and Girls during his administration to focus on women’s issues. But Biden’s policy council will focus on all issues of gender, not just women’s issues. “This is a matter of human rights, justice, and fairness,” the White House announced Monday. The Biden administration said the council would aggressively work on “intersecting forms of discrimination” including “LGBTQI+” people. From the fact sheet release : The White House Gender Policy Council will be an essential part of the Biden-Harris … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Marks International Women’s Day with White House Council on Gender Policy
