REUTERS: Athletes will be allowed to wear shoes still under development in international competitions and events where World Athletics rules apply, upon approval of the shoes' specifications, after a rule change by the sport's governing body. The shoes will have to meet the same technical specifications as other approved shoes, World Athletics said. The amendment - rubber-stamped by the World Athletics Council on Friday - applies to competitions sanctioned by World Athletics, area associations or member federations at which its rules apply. But such "development shoes" will not be permitted in the World Athletics Series or at the Olympics. A debate over runners' shoes has been raging since high-tech footwear developed by Nike played a starring role in two of the biggest distance-running achievements of 2019. Eliud Kipchoge's sub-two-hour marathon in Vienna and Brigid Kosgei's record-breaking run at the Chicago Marathon brought Nike's Vaporfly shoes into the spotlight, … [Read more...] about World Athletics to allow ‘development shoes’ if they meet technical specifications

CNA named Channel of the Year by Association for International Broadcasting
SINGAPORE: CNA has been recognised as Channel of the Year by the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB), the global trade association for broadcast journalism. The channel beat out fellow nominees BBC News Persian, CNN International and Iran International TV for the prize, the UK-based AIB announced on Friday (Nov 13). Commenting on the win, the AIB highlighted CNA's coverage of the Hong Kong protests and COVID-19 , as well as its clear cultural identity as an Asian brand. "2020 started as a busy year for CNA covering the Hong Kong riots and the global implications of the relationship with China - a story well and truly 'on their doorstep'," the AIB said. "CNA's workload became even heavier as a once in a lifetime event hit the entire planet. Not only was the pandemic a major story, it also brought immense challenges to the way broadcasters themselves could work." The channel rose to these challenges, with its coverage of the pandemic becoming "another … [Read more...] about CNA named Channel of the Year by Association for International Broadcasting
Commentary: Sending international students home will hurt the US more than benefit it
BALTIMORE, Maryland: US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, made a decision on Jul 6 regarding international students in the US that will affect far more than just the roughly 870,000 international students themselves. Based on what I know about the power and influence of higher education in the US, this decision could increase the tuition American students pay, cost thousands of jobs throughout the nation and erode America’s stature in the world. Under this new rule, international students may stay in the country only if they attend a college or university offering in-person classes this fall. Otherwise, they won’t be able to get visas, enter the country or stay here if they plan to attend one of the many schools that are teaching students entirely online. (ABC News) Map: Badgerys Creek 2555 Land values around Australia's new international airport have taken off — but it's corporations, not residents, cashing in. A few strands of wire is all that separates Peter Srzich from millions of dollars. His 2 hectare property has a house, some sheds and a few pigs and goats. It is directly opposite the $5.3 billion Western Sydney airport, due to open at Badgerys Creek in 2026. Next door is the Leppington Pastoral Company — one of Australia's largest dairy farms, situated on a 519ha property owned by brothers Ron and Tony Perich. Commentary: In Singapore, laws are necessary for trickle-down policies to work
SINGAPORE: At one level, the unprecedented three-in-one Unity, Resilience, and Solidarity Budgets demonstrate the resolve of Singapore to ensure businesses and households are helped amid the public health concerns and the economic fallout of the COVID-19 global pandemic. But fiscal resolve alone is not enough. Everyone must play his part. If it’s every person for himself, then we will all be worse off for it. Unfortunately we have already seen some examples of this self-seeking behaviour. Besides being socially undesirable, such behaviour also undermines policies and measures that are targeted at a macro-level but intended to trickle down to all levels of society. LANDLORDS "CAPTURING RENT" For instance, in the Unity Budget unveiled on Feb 18, a S$4 billion Stabilisation and Support Package was created for businesses and workers affected by the evolving COVID-19 situation.
