NEW YORK: Intel on Thursday (Oct 22) missed third-quarter revenue estimates for its data-centre chip unit as the COVID-19 pandemic crippled sales to government and business customers, sending its shares down 10 per cent. Revenue from Intel's data-centre business fell 7 per cent to US$5.9 billion in the reported quarter, while analysts on average had expected revenue of US$6.21 billion, according to FactSet. Intel is the dominant provider of processor chips for PCs and data centres, but the company has struggled with manufacturing delays, saying in July that its next generation of chipmaking technology has slipped six months behind schedule. NEW YORK: Intel Corp's US$9 billion sale of its NAND memory chip unit will help the US chip giant focus on its core business in higher-margin processors, Wall Street analysts said on Tuesday (Oct 19), after its deal with South Korea's SK Hynix. Intel, best known for making computer processors used in desktops and laptops, has been trying to focus more on its strengths, including the Optane memory business, which is smaller but lucrative as it taps more advanced technology. Exiting the NAND chips business will also help the chipmaker fend off the impact on profit from being in a cut-throat commodity memory market, where prices cycle through booms and busts. CALIFORNIA: Intel has agreed to sell its NAND memory chip business to SK Hynix for US$9 billion in an all-cash deal that would propel the South Korean chipmaker to second in the global rankings. The deal will allow SK Hynix to overtake Japan's Kioxia in the NAND memory market, and narrow the gap with market leader Samsung Electronics as the shift to work-from-home boosts demand for chips used in tablets and servers. SK Hynix said Intel would sell all of its NAND business including its solid-state drive business, NAND product and wafer business, and its factory in Dalian, China. Intel would keep its Optane business, its advanced memory technology. The deal would allow Intel to focus on its remaining memory business, Optane, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. The United Arab Emirates supports Saudi Arabia's position on the Khashoggi report, according to the Emirati state news agency WAM. The Emirati Foreign Ministry "expressed its confidence in and support for the Saudi judiciary rulings, which affirm the kingdom's commitment to implementing the law in a transparent and impartial manner, and holding all those involved in this case accountable", WAM said. The Saudi Foreign Ministry previously stressed that those responsible for the killing were investigated and brought to justice by a Saudi court - a ruling that the statement added, was welcomed by members of Khashoggi's family. Intel's 11th-Gen eight-core Tiger Lake-H 45W processors for mobile devices are expected to land in the first quarter, and, judging by the latest retailer listings (via momomo_us ), the 10nm chips shouldn't be far off. Intel has launched several Tiger Lake chips that adhere to power limits under 35W. However, the chipmaker will have to roll out the 45W parts if it really wants to compete against AMD's core-heavy Ryzen 5000 (Cezanne) processors. Like all Tiger Lake offerings, the 45W processors are based on Intel's 10nm SuperFin (10SF) process node and wield Willow Cove cores and Xe LP graphics. Besides the power limit increase, the 45W chips also bump Tiger Lake's maximum core count of up to eight cores, while current Tiger Lake processors on the market max out at four cores.
