ZURICH: A Dutch court on Wednesday ordered a criminal investigation into the conduct of UBS Chief Executive Ralph Hamers when he was the head of Dutch bank ING Group, which failed to implement anti-money laundering laws in the Netherlands. The investigation comes as a blow for UBS just a month after Hamers became head of the world's largest wealth manager, which is trying to move on from a legacy of costly court cases. The Swiss bank said in a statement that it had full confidence in Hamers' ability to continue managing while Dutch prosecutors conducted their investigation. Hamers ran ING, the largest bank in the Netherlands, from 2013 to June. It paid 775 million euros (US$940 million) in 2018 in a settlement with Dutch prosecutors for failing to spot money laundering and other criminal activities by its clients. The court of appeal in The Hague said on Wednesday that the 2018 settlement stands but that it had instructed prosecutors to open a new investigation into the … [Read more...] about Dutch prosecutors to investigate UBS chief over ING money laundering case

Football: Southampton striker Ings out for up to six weeks
REUTERS: Southampton striker Danny Ings has been ruled out for between four and six weeks with a knee injury, manager Ralph Hasenhuettl said on Wednesday (Nov 4). Ings sustained the injury in Saints' 4-3 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, where he scored his fifth league goal of the season but was substituted just before full-time after a collision with midfielder Trezeguet. "At the moment it looks like he is out for four to six weeks," Hasenhuettl told a news conference before Friday's home game against Newcastle United. "He'll have a small surgery tomorrow morning. It could be worse, but he'll be out and it's not good news for us. "We are more than Danny Ings. It's a big loss but it's important now for other players to give us alternatives. Nobody has to play like Danny Ings, every player should play his best possible game." The injury also rules the 28-year-old out of England's upcoming friendly international against Ireland on Nov. 12, and their … [Read more...] about Football: Southampton striker Ings out for up to six weeks
Villa’s Smith wary of threat posed by Saints strike duo of Ings and Adams
REUTERS: Aston Villa boss Dean Smith believes Sunday's opponents Southampton are a team on the rise that have only improved since the Premier League returned from its COVID-19 hiatus and much of that is thanks to their strike duo of Danny Ings and Che Adams. Southampton have only lost three games since the restart in June and sit seventh in the standings after handing league leaders Everton their first loss of the season last weekend. Ings and Adams have led the line for Ralph Hasenhuettl's side in all six games this season and have six goals and four assists between them. "They've got goals in the team with Danny Ings and Che Adams, two strikers that can stretch the game and we have to be wary of their strengths," Smith told reporters on Friday. "They've got a really good systematic approach that works for them. We'll have to be at our best. "They were good against Everton last week and had a really good comeback against Chelsea (in a 3-3 draw) the week before as well. … [Read more...] about Villa’s Smith wary of threat posed by Saints strike duo of Ings and Adams
Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen calls for ‘meaningful dialogue’ with China
TAIPEI: Taiwan wants to have "meaningful dialogue" with China on an equal basis, President Tsai Ing-wen said on Saturday (Oct 10), extending an olive branch at a time of heightened military tension with Beijing, which claims the island as sovereign Chinese territory. Democratic Taiwan has come under increasing pressure from Beijing, which has ramped up air force activity near the island in the past few weeks, including crossing the Taiwan Strait's sensitive mid line that normally serves as an unofficial buffer zone. READ: Taiwan says it has spent almost US$900 million scrambling against China this year China says it is responding to "collusion" between Washington and Taipei, angered at growing US support for the island. Beijing views this as a precursor to Taiwan declaring formal independence, a red line for China. Speaking at its National Day celebrations, Tsai described the situation in the Taiwan Strait as "quite tense". This, along with disputes in the South China Sea, … [Read more...] about Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen calls for ‘meaningful dialogue’ with China
Southampton edge Brighton in south coast derby
BRIGHTON, England: Southampton came from behind to beat traditional south coast rivals Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 in the Premier League on Monday as Jannik Vestergaard and Danny Ings cancelled out a Pascal Gross opener for the home side. German midfielder Gross fired Brighton ahead with a 26th-minute penalty before Vestergaard levelled with a superb header on the stroke of halftime and Ings turned the match on its head with an 81st-minute penalty. The result left Southampton fifth in the standings on 20 points from 11 games while Brighton stayed 16th on 10 points, four clear of the relegation zone. James Ward-Prowse handled an innocuous-looking ball in the area and Gross made no mistake with the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Alex McCarthy the wrong way. Ward-Prowse made amends when he floated in an inviting corner for Vestergaard to head home inside the far post as Southampton pressed in the closing stages of the first half. When the match seemed to be heading for a … [Read more...] about Southampton edge Brighton in south coast derby
