MUMBAI: India batsman Rohit Sharma has recovered from a hamstring injury and will fly to Australia to join the test squad Down Under, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) said on Saturday. Rohit was initially ruled out of the entire Australia tour with a high-grade left hamstring injury, which kept him out of four Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in the United Arab Emirates. The 33-year-old, who opens the batting for India, returned to lead the Mumbai Indians to a record fifth IPL title, prompting questions about the extent of his injury. The BCCI subsequently added him to the test squad, while monitoring his recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, having deemed him still unfit to travel with the rest of the team to Australia. "The NCA medical Team was satisfied with the physical fitness of Mr Sharma after assessing him on different metrics that tested his skills related to batting, fielding and running between the wickets," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said … [Read more...] about Fit-again India batsman Rohit cleared to fly to Australia

India look to get job done in Australia after Kohli cameo
MELBOURNE: Facing a stronger Australia and with only fleeting involvement from talisman Virat Kohli, India need everything to go right for them over four taxing tests if they are to deliver another series win Down Under two years after their breakthrough tour. Kohli led India to a 2-1 triumph in 2018/19 but the soon-to-be dad will hand over the reins to deputy Ajinkya Rahane after next week's series-opener in Adelaide. Few in cricket-mad India would begrudge Kohli's baby joy, but covering for the loss of his leadership, batting and chutzpah will require a huge collective effort from the players that remain. Kohli's paternity leave is just one of a number of twists in the buildup to a series that has been on a knife-edge for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and government health protocols. A cluster of infections in South Australia a month ago threatened to scupper the opening test but with the outbreak contained a crowd of up to 27,000 will be allowed to file into … [Read more...] about India look to get job done in Australia after Kohli cameo
Should we be afraid of TikTok?
MUMBAI and SINGAPORE: Living in a remote area, Mahesh Kapse almost went undiscovered. His village of Veni, an 11-hour drive from Mumbai, is so forgotten that it has seen barely any economic development in decades. But the 23-year-old is famous, thanks to TikTok. His most watched video has more than 71 million views, and his one-of-a-kind speed painting skill brought reactions from Indian stars and international cricket players. In three months to June, he gained 1.25 million followers — and an income that was almost four times what his family earned from farming. The first thing he bought with this money from TikTok was a gas cylinder. “Ever since we bought that, it’s become very easy to cook meals. It has two burners. That’s a good thing,” he said. “Previously it was very difficult for my family to cook meals in (our) hearth.” The fact that TikTok allowed the rural poor to make a living as internet celebrities was a big draw as India became the app’s largest market, with … [Read more...] about Should we be afraid of TikTok?
