EDITORIAL: Vaccination passports are on the way and they could be the ticket to kick-starting New Zealand’s tourism economy. But these tokens of access and privilege will also be battlegrounds of borders and bureaucracies. New Zealand should learn from the experiences of other countries before it embraces what will quickly become hotly desired – and hotly contested – papers of passage. On Sunday, Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said the country was in “active discussions” about vaccine passports , which would allow people to show that they had been vaccinated when travelling. He said they were “almost an inevitability” in “probably the not-too-distant future” which sounds like code for “I’m floating the trial balloon for a policy Cabinet has already endorsed”. Air New Zealand is set to trial a digital “Travel Pass” app on its Auckland-Sydney route in April. The app, developed by airline trade group the International Air Transport Association, was launched in late … [Read more...] about Covid-19 vaccine passports will be hotly desired – and contested

Catholic-PC, Episcopal bring statewide rankings, desire for challenge into Thursday showdown
Mention the intrigue a matchup between two top-10 football teams from different classifications can bring to Week 3 without naming the schools and Friday’s game between Class 4A St. Thomas More and 5A Catholic High probably comes to mind first. But a 7:30 p.m. Thursday game between Catholic High of Pointe Coupee and Episcopal should not be overlooked. CHSPC (1-1) enters the game ranked No. 6 in Class 1A and hosts the eighth-ranked Knights of 2A at NRG Field in New Roads. The game helps highlight a Week 3 Thursday schedule that includes nine games. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for everything (coach) David (Simoneaux) and his program at Catholic,” Episcopal coach Travis Bourgeois said. “Every time we have played them the last few years, whether it has been in a scrimmage or a regular-season game, we have gotten a good gauge on where we are. “That is what I expect this time. With the offense they run, they give you so much to prepare for. This is our first game on the … [Read more...] about Catholic-PC, Episcopal bring statewide rankings, desire for challenge into Thursday showdown
Canterbury University to launch academy to help young Māori prosper
The University of Canterbury has committed to helping indigenous rangatahi (youth) prosper with the establishment of a new Māori Futures Academy. Partnering with Ngāi Tahu’s Tokona Te Raki Māori Futures Collective, the centre will launch in April and give paid internships to 10 rangatahi per year for the next three years. The cadetships intended to encourage leading-edge thinking, research, and innovative, future-focused skills, so they could then tackle complex real-world projects. Tokona Te Raki executive director Dr Eruera Tarena has previously spoken about the need for the education sector to address long-standing inequities that leave Māori "disillusioned" and isolated . Looking after traumatised young people is a legacy of the quakes, says PM
STUFF Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern talks to The Press about the youth of Christchurch who have grown up with a constant reminder of the quakes. Looking after children whose young lives were defined by the trauma of the Canterbury earthquakes is the Government’s responsibility and a legacy of the disaster, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says. Visiting Christchurch on the tenth anniversary of the February 2011 earthquakes, Ardern told Stuff she could sense optimism in the recovering city. She said the Government had a role in caring for those young people who have grown up with a broken city and a disaster zone for a home, their lives punctuated by thousands of aftershocks in the months after the quakes. “It is never for any of us to determine how people should be feeling or will be feeling 10 years after,’’ she said.
