She told the court how she 'did not get on' with car she was driving - a Toyota Yaris - as it had semi-automatic transmission, which she hadn't got the hang of. She pleaded with the court not to disqualify her from driving, saying: 'I had a hybrid car that I didn't get on … [Read more...] about Orlando Bloom’s mother, 78, is spared driving ban after she was caught doing 50mph in a 30mph zone because she was in a hybrid semi-automatic car she ‘didn’t get on with at all’

What started as a fun drive for a 30-year-old businessman ended with a swollen leg, blackouts and an emergency trip to a hospital in a critical condition two days later. Saurabh Sharma suffered a pulmonary embolism — a blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. Doctors said it was caused by a non-stop eight-hour-long drive wearing tight-fitting denims. “I was on my way to Rishikesh and wore tight denims. Since it was an automatic car, my left leg did not move at all. I started feeling the pain in my calves and knees but I ignored it. Driverless trucks will be safer and cheaper than their human-controlled counterparts, but that doesn’t mean America’s 3.5 million professional truck drivers are giving up to the machines without a fight. Across the US, truckers collectively haul more than 10bn tons of freight each year, but it’s a tough job – the hours are long and lonely, the pay is low and the lifestyle is sedentary. In many ways it’s a job ripe for disruption; robots v truckers. “Picture the taxi drivers around the world acting in response to Uber,” says Andy Stern, the former former president of the Service Employees International Union, referring to protests and violence that erupted in many cities as the $62.5bn Silicon Valley on-demand ride-hailing firm challenged conventional, regulated taxis. “Truck drivers will follow a similar pattern,” says Stern. “There will be disruption in different places. You can imagine people ringing state capitals with … [Read more...] about Self-driving trucks: what’s the future for America’s 3.5 million truckers?
Why spend more at the gas pump when you can easily spend less? The team at The Family Handyman shares this list of DIY tricks for a noticeable difference in your fuel costs. The savings are based on driving 20,000 miles per year, in a car that gets 20 mpg, with gasoline priced at $3.75 a gallon. Save $900 by Keeping Your Tires at the Right Pressure Surveys show that 60 percent of the vehicles on the road have tires that are underinflated by at least 30 percent. That's at least 9 psi below the manufacturer's recommended pressure. That can cost you almost 7 percent in wasted fuel ($245 per year, or 24¢ per gallon). Plus, low air pressure causes premature tire wear, and that can cost almost $300 over the life of the tires. For best results, check your tire's air pressure with a digital pressure gauge (about $10 at any auto parts store) and fill to the recommended pressure shown on the decal inside the driver's door or on the driver's door pillar.
