Nam O Reef, the green pearl of Da Nang

· March 1, 2021 ·

Nguyen Thanh Nam has been leading tours in Da Nang for more than a decade and he says most tourists cannot help but be amazed at the beautiful nature of Nam O Reef. “The reefs combine with beautiful sand, clear blue seawater, and green trees to become a must-visit destination for nature lovers when coming to Da Nang,” said Nam. “During spring, when the tide recedes, rocks of different shapes and sizes reveal they are covered with green moss. They look so beautiful, just like green pearls." Born in Da Nang and spending his childhood living near the reef, Nam has been coming to the place since it was just a pristine beach where fishermen in Nam O village made their living. “The name can be referred to as 'The beach located in the south of Chau O', it also means 'southern gate',” said the 35-year-old tour guide. “Nam O Reef is about 500m long jutting out into the sea with a dense layer of rock hidden under the cool blue seawater. There are many rock layers, stacked to form many … [Read more...] about Nam O Reef, the green pearl of Da Nang

Commentary: Why it’s not in Beijing’s interest to rock the Hong Kong boat

· August 13, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: How precarious is the situation in Hong Kong today, and to whom? To outsiders watching Hong Kong, pervasive images of the chaotic scenes of clashes between the protesters and the police force have created an impression that the city is now in a very dangerous situation. READ: Hong Kong has become less of a financial centre prize for China, a commentary To the business community in Hong Kong, however, the real danger lies not in the current protests, but in how autonomous the city can continue to be. A recent study by credit ratings agency Moody’s drives this point home. LIMITED IMPACT ON BUSINESS SENTIMENTS In early July, despite the massive anti-extradition protests in Hong Kong, Moody’s affirmed the city’s Aa2 credit rating, which remains two notches higher than China’s A1. The rating incorporates Moody’s assessment of political risk for Hong Kong, which takes into account challenges to the government’s policies in recent years and particularly … [Read more...] about Commentary: Why it’s not in Beijing’s interest to rock the Hong Kong boat

Black and Indigenous people less likely to trust Toronto police, survey finds

· May 29, 2019 ·

There are “striking” differences in Torontonians’ perceptions of police depending on their race, with Black and Indigenous residents showing the lowest levels of trust in the city’s officers, according to a newly released survey commissioned by the civilian police board. The survey found 50 per cent of Black respondents believe officers discriminated against them because of their ethnic background, and its results show a “very clear” association between carding and the public’s perception of Toronto police officers, its authors state. Overall, 68 per cent of those surveyed believe the city’s police officers are honest. But that approval rating changes once broken down by race: while 72 per cent of white respondents said police were honest, just 41 per cent of Black and just over half of Indigenous people agreed. “Blacks and some other minority groups clearly do not view the city’s law enforcement officers in the same light as their white/Caucasian peers,” write survey authors … [Read more...] about Black and Indigenous people less likely to trust Toronto police, survey finds
