Photo: Kevin Mazur/HBO Last month, 2018’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony rocked out in Cleveland — and we mean really rocked out; it was nearly five hours long — with the event finally being broadcast on HBO this weekend for everyone to experience. Since Vulture was in the room where it happened, we decided to compile the highest of highs, the lowest of lows, and the just plain whoas! from this year’s ceremony, which saw Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, the Moody Blues, Nina Simone, the Cars, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe get the induction honors. HIGH: Howard Stern’s raunchy speech. When David Letterman subbed in to present for Pearl Jam as a means of eleventh-hour necessity at last year’s Rock Hall induction — the original presenter, Neil Young, became too ill to attend — the musician-adjacent-comedian era of the Hall was officially born. Howard Stern continued the new tradition this year by presenting for his good pals … [Read more...] about The Highs, Lows, and Whoas of the 2018 Rock Hall Induction Ceremony

French Muslim women on burqa ban ruling: ‘All I want is to live in peace’
Anti-discrimination organisations have expressed shock after the European court of human rights ruled that France has the right to ban women from wearing the full-face veil in public in the interests of everyone "living together". The judges ruled that the contested ban affected a group of Muslim women but did not take away their freedom to wear in public clothing or items that did not hide their faces. "The question of accepting or not that the full veil can be worn in public is a society's choice," they ruled on Tuesday. Shami Chakrabarti, director of the UK human rights pressure group Liberty, said the ban "has nothing to do with gender equality and everything to do with rising racism in western Europe". She added: "How do you liberate women by criminalising their clothing? If you suspect bruises under a burqa, why punish the victim, and if you disapprove of the wearer's choices, how does banishing her from public engagement promote liberal attitudes?" The law, active in France and … [Read more...] about French Muslim women on burqa ban ruling: ‘All I want is to live in peace’
White Widow death riddle: Conflicting reports as to how the world’s most wanted woman died
The alleged death of the terror suspect known as the White Widow remains a mystery. Samantha Lewthwaite, 30, reportedly died a “slow and agonising death” at the hands of a Russian sniper. The claim she was killed fighting alongside Ukrainian forces has been dismissed as propaganda for Russia. But journalist Alexey Toporov, who backs rebels in eastern Ukraine, insisted: “She ended in a bad way.” No image has been shown of the body of the wife of 7/7 bomber Germaine Lindsay. Lewthwaite, dubbed the world’s most wanted woman, was reportedly killed two weeks ago by a Russian sniper after teaming up with the pro-Ukrainian government battalion Aidar. Britain is seeking to verify shock claims that she was gunned down by pro-Moscow rebel forces, as reported by Regnum news agency in Moscow. The journalist behind the story, Toporov, a supporter of the separatists, claimed: “It is said that her death was not quick - which was the right way to do it.” His … [Read more...] about White Widow death riddle: Conflicting reports as to how the world’s most wanted woman died
Mo Farah takes world 5,000m silver to fall short of a farewell double
Block by block the crowd inside the London Stadium rose like an advancing Mexican wave as Mo Farah sprinted past in pursuit of the Ethiopian duo ahead. So often they have seen him win from this position but after 10 straight global titles and four double golds, finally, he could not find a way. Body heaving with adrenaline and emotion, he curled into the foetal position at the finish, beaten in a major final for the first time in six years. Silver on this occasion stung like defeat and salt was rubbed into open wounds by his conqueror, Muktar Edris of Ethiopia, performing the iconic Mobot at the finish. This 5,000m was billed as the 34-year-old’s perfect farewell. Those wearing “Go Mo!” face paint and waving “Run, Farah, Run!” banners were expecting one last gold on the track before he moves to the road next year. But his rivals set the tone even before the race began. Paul Chelimo of the USA, who pushed Farah all the way at the Rio Olympics, also did the … [Read more...] about Mo Farah takes world 5,000m silver to fall short of a farewell double
