Source: TheDigitalArtist/Pixabay In fields such as biotechnology, medicine, pharmaceutical, health care, and life sciences, the need to ensure human health and safety is of the highest priority when deploying artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning. Researchers at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and their collaborators created a framework to audit and debias AI machine learning in life sciences and published their recent study in Communications Biology . “Biases in data used to train machine learning (ML) models can inflate their prediction performance and confound our understanding of how and what they learn,” wrote Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard researchers Fatma-Elzahraa Eid, Haitham Elmarakeby, Yujia Alina Chan, Nadine Fornelos, Eliezer Van Allen, and Kasper Lage, along with Mahmoud ElHefnawi at the National Research Centre in Giza, Egypt, and Lenwood Heath at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. “Although biases are common in … [Read more...] about New Model to Reduce AI Bias in Life Sciences and Biomedicine

Ousted Tunisian president Ben Ali dies at 83
TUNIS: Tunisia's all-powerful leader for over two decades, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was forced from power and into exile by a landmark popular uprising in early 2011, sparking revolts across the Arab world. The man who once appeared in official portraits with a benevolent smile and jet black hair died Thursday aged 83, in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia's foreign ministry said. His downfall ignited similar uprisings against other authoritarian leaders across the Arab region, which led to the removal of Egypt's Hosni Mubarak and Libya's Muammar Gaddafi in the same year. A career soldier, Ben Ali took power on Nov 7, 1987 when he toppled Habib Bourguiba, the ailing father of Tunisian independence who was by then reported to be senile. "I needed to re-establish the rule of law," Ben Ali told a French television channel in 1988. "The president was ill and his inner circle was harmful." Tunisians, including Islamists, hailed his bloodless, non-violent takeover. He went on to make … [Read more...] about Ousted Tunisian president Ben Ali dies at 83

Football: Mane, Firmino shoot Liverpool to victory at Southampton
SOUTHAMPTON: Liverpool made it two successive wins to start their Premier League title bid as goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino clinched a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday (Aug 17). Jurgen Klopp's tired team were ragged in their passing and lacked organisation in defence, but still showed enough mental strength to come away with three points. It was completely against the run of play when Senegal winger Mane put Liverpool ahead against his former club just before half time at St Mary's. Brazil forward Firmino scored a clinical second but a dreadful error by Reds goalkeeper Adrian gifted a goal to Danny Ings that set up a tense finish Former Liverpool forward Ings should really have equalised to give Southampton what would have been a well-deserved point. The reason for the Champions League winners' lacklustre display was not hard to find. While Southampton were recovering from their defeat at Burnley on the opening weekend of the season, … [Read more...] about Football: Mane, Firmino shoot Liverpool to victory at Southampton
