PAUL, MINNESOTA - Dozens of people gathered in front of the Minnesota governor's mansion on Saturday to demand accountability for police officers, days before a former Minneapolis officer is scheduled to go on trial in the death of George Floyd. Many of the roughly 150 people who demonstrated in Minnesota were family members of others who died during police encounters. Similar protests were being organized in cities around the country in advance of the trial of Derek Chauvin. Floyd, a Black man, died May 25 after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against Floyd's neck while Floyd was held face-down on the ground in handcuffs, saying he couldn't breathe. Body-camera video time stamps provided by prosecutors show Chauvin held his position for about nine minutes, even after Floyd stopped moving. Floyd was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. Jury selection in his trial begins Monday. On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Ingraham Angle,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva stated that black and Latino communities will bear the cost of Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon’s “ill-advised” crime policies “and the people supporting these policies are far removed from the problem. CrossFit has denounced the "loathsome and dangerous lies" of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a former CrossFit affiliate gym owner who has continued to tout the brand. Greene, an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump who was elected last November, was last month removed from all of her House committee assignments following a bipartisan vote prompted by a series of controversial past remarks, including past support of pro-Trump conspiracy theories like QAnon and Pizzagate. Although CrossFit had previously been silent about the congresswoman, the company disavowed Greene in a BuzzFeed News article on Monday. "CrossFit supports respectful fact-based political dialogue to address our common challenges, and we strongly oppose the loathsome and dangerous lies attributed to Ms. Greene," CrossFit spokesperson Andrew Weinstein told BuzzFeed. Nearly 11,000 businesses that received the wage subsidy have been audited, with hundreds under active consideration for legal action. The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) has been carrying out the random audits, as more than 759,000 businesses have received the wage subsidy from the $14 billion fund. As at February 26, MSD had completed 10,902 audits of the wage subsidy and resolved 4750 allegations of misuse. MSD client service support general manager George van Ooyen said altogether 1011 cases had been referred to investigators for potential legal action.
