Commentary: Save forests or build 4-rooms? It’s not a zero-sum game

· December 12, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: In late October, drone footage of Clementi Forest went viral, and many came to learn of and appreciate its wild beauty. But after learning that the land had been earmarked for residential development, some netizens have called for its preservation, shining a spotlight on the dilemma of conserving forests in land-scarce Singapore. A petition to protect Clementi Forest on Change.org has amassed over 10,000 signatures since its launch on Oct 26. In response to queries, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said on Nov 30 that while Clementi Forest is classified as "Residential (Subjected to Detailed Planning)", there are no immediate plans for development yet. Apart from providing visually stunning landscapes, preserving densely vegetated areas has many practical benefits. They help mitigate the effects of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reducing urban heat and preventing floods. Sizable forests also act as wildlife corridors that … [Read more...] about Commentary: Save forests or build 4-rooms? It’s not a zero-sum game

The man who changed the game at Marico

· April 11, 2014 ·

Next Viveat Susan Pinto in Mumbai Among the handful of Indian fast-moving consumer goods makers who have dared to take on multinational corporations, notes Viveat Susan Pinto. I t is business as usual when you walk into Marico’s office in Kalina, Mumbai. Executives can be found hard at work at their desks and everything appears to be in order. The credit for this peace, in spite of the high-profile change at the top, goes to Marico’s 63-year-old chairman, Harsh Mariwala (photographed) . Among the handful of Indian fast-moving consumer goods makers who have dared to take on multinational corporations, Mariwala stepped down last month as the managing director of the company he built from scratch to make way for a new leader, Saugata Gupta. Of course, Gupta is no stranger to Marico -- he has worked 10 years in the company in various leadership positions. Click NEXT to read further. . . How I Learned to Love Dying (in

· February 26, 2021 ·

Photo-Illustration: by Vulture; Photo by Supergiant Games As I lost my grip on reality over the past year, I found comfort in virtual ones. For the first time since my teens, I was playing Nintendo. Initially it was Breath of the Wild , the giant open-world Zelda game, which offered a fantastic opportunity to do things I could not do in real life, like travel, buy a house, or save the world from a primordial manifestation of evil. As the pandemic dragged on, I turned to Hades , a video game in which you play as Zagreus, the son of Hades, attempting to escape the Underworld. The structure is straightforward: There’s a beginning and an alleged end when you reach the surface. It’s fast and difficult, and I was terrible at it. I texted my friends beseeching them for their help: Help! They lobbed benign platitudes like “Keep trying!” and “It gets better!” I died and died and died in both new and familiar ways in a Groundhog Day reprise. I learned to take pleasure in the … [Read more...] about How I Learned to Love Dying (in

Rodea The Sky Soldier review

· November 13, 2015 ·

Glimpses of Yuji Naka's outmoded genius can be seen in Rodea's barren skies, but a paucity and dissonance of ideas make this a failure. Ever play the game in which you must try to move from one side of a room to the other without touching the floor? The learning curve is low, but the risks are perilously high. Cracked lamps, bloody noses and scattered potpourri await the over-ambitious player, he who leaps from the arm of a sofa, over the baffled cat, only to put a clumsy foot through the coffee table. There's little grace involved, on those slow, wet childhood afternoons. Nevertheless, everyone involved believes, beforehand, that they'll move with enviable feline refinement, from mantelpiece, to lampshade to victory. Rodea: The Sky Soldier's development team clearly had a similar hopeful vision for this project, in which you play as a quick-footed robot boy, able to hover and glide through the air. As you tumble off walls and enemies, so you recharge the titular boy's … [Read more...] about Rodea The Sky Soldier review
