PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA - The National Bank of Cambodia, the country’s central bank, is aiming to reduce the country’s dependence on the U.S. dollar with the introduction of digital currencies and the phasing out of small-denomination U.S. currency – $1, $2 and $5 bills – in favor of the local currency, the riel. Cambodia has run a dual-currency system since United Nations peacekeepers arrived to oversee elections in 1993, bringing with them U.S. dollars, which circulated in tandem with riel, providing much-needed currency stability amid postwar reconstruction. National Bank of Cambodia Governor Chea Chanto said in September that demand for the riel had increased an average of 16% a year for two decades, with annual economic growth rates of 7.8%, adding that fewer U.S. dollars in circulation would give the central bank greater control over the economy. “I firmly believe all ministries, institutions, companies, enterprises and those who actively participate in the process of … [Read more...] about Cambodia Aims to Reduce Dependency on US Dollar

(Photo by Somchai Poomlard) Auto loan providers have launched new debt restructuring packages to control non-performing loans (NPLs) after forecasting higher bad debts in the first quarter due to the impact of the pandemic. Tisco Bank, the country's leading automotive lender, introduced a debt pay-off campaign for customers purchasing commercial vans, who largely operate in tourism-related businesses and have been battered by the pandemic. The bank launched the campaign late last year for businesses operating tour vans, which are considered on a case-by-case basis, said president and chief operating officer Sakchai Peechapat. The solution is a financial instrument to help customers who cannot service their debts to close their loan accounts and maintain a good credit record with the National Credit Bureau. New Apple Watch study aims to add stroke detection to the list of life-saving features
Apple and Johnson & Johnson have announced a new study that may make the Apple Watch even more of a life-saving device. Building on the device’s ability to detect afib , the app-based program is designed to explore whether early detection of irregular heartbeats can reduce the risk of a stroke. The Heartline Study is open to all U.S. Apple Watch owners 65 and older who are Original Medicare recipients. Users will receive tips for improving your sleep, fitness, and wellness, and be asked to participate in a series of surveys and activities which will reward points for the time and effort spent. According to J&J, these points may be redeemed for $150 or more in monetary rewards. But more important than the cash prizes will be the potential impact on your health. According to the release, up to 30 percent of sufferers don’t know they have atrial fibrillation until a serious cardiovascular event, such as a stroke, occurs. Microsoft Surface Tablet with Windows 8 Takes Aim at iPad
Microsoft released Surface today, their direct competitor to the iPad and Android tablets. As you’d expect, the device is a touchscreen tablet but differs from the iPad in that it comes in two distinct versions; a traditional tablet model based on ARM architecture and runs only Windows RT – that’s Metro for those who don’t follow MS closely – and the other is a pro model based on Intel Ivy Bridge chips that runs full-fledged Windows 8 desktop. Other than providing a look at Apple’s competition, perhaps most interesting to iPad users is the cover that ships with the tablet. Upon first appearance it looks like a Smart Cover knock-off, but it actually one-ups Apple’s offering by including a completely functional multitouch keyboard built directly into the cover itself. It certainly looks fascinating, and assuming it works well you can bet third party cover manufactures will be cranking out similar cases for the iPad soon. Onto the Surface specs: Surface – Standard model … [Read more...] about Microsoft Surface Tablet with Windows 8 Takes Aim at iPad
