Jail for man who sent women photos of his genitals and sexual messages on social media platforms
SINGAPORE: Assuming various identities, a man targeted women on Instagram, Facebook and Telegram, sending them photos of his genitals or sexually explicit messages. The 30-year-old was sentenced on Friday (Mar 5) to three years and one week's jail and a fine of S$4,000. He cannot be named as some of the victims are his ex-colleagues and may potentially be identified. The man pleaded guilty to five charges, including sending sexually explicit messages and obscene photos and possessing 92 obscene films. The bulk of his jail term was for a charge of consuming methamphetamine. Another three charges were considered in sentencing. SMEs look for more productivity improvement schemes in upcoming Budget
SINGAPORE : The Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) Scheme is into its third year. The take-up rate of the scheme across small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has gone up from a low single digit in the first year to more than 25 percent now. Going forward, analysts expect further refinements to the scheme to be revealed at the upcoming Budget. One company which has benefited from the scheme is City Foods. It makes up to 16,000 sticks of satay a day. Its production capacity was given a huge boost after it bought a S$17,000 machine last year. Now City Foods, a halal-certified subsidiary of City Satay, is able to produce 200 sticks an hour, up from 100 sticks an hour previously. Chow Koon Meng, General Manager, City Satay, said: "When I look at my production, most of the skewers that we're doing, especially those in odd sizes - they are hand-skewered. A look at Halimah Yacob’s political career
SINGAPORE: Madam Halimah Yacob will be the first woman to become Singapore's Speaker of Parliament, if elected. This is to fill the post vacated by former Member of Parliament, Mr Michael Palmer, who stepped down last month due to an extramarital affair. However, she will have to relinquish political office as she's currently Minister of State for Social and Family Development. Madam Halimah Yacob entered politics in 2001 when she was elected MP for Jurong GRC. After the 2011 General Election, she was made Minister of State for then-Community Development, Youth and Sports. Her portfolio - including child care and the social service sector - remained unchanged after the ministry's restructure into the new Ministry of Social and Family Development. Fifty-eight-year-old Madam Halimah is known as a labour MP, with 34 years in the labour movement. In her 2011 campaign video, she championed low-wage worker issue and she said: "We've all seen how globalisation has affected … [Read more...] about A look at Halimah Yacob’s political career
No road tax reduction for recent ERP hikes, says Transport Minister Lui
SINGAPORE: The recent increase in Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) rates along the Central Expressway and East Coast Parkway is a result of a "routine adjustment" in response to traffic conditions. Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew told Parliament on Thursday this would not lead to a reduction in road tax. He explained ERP rates are adjusted generally by a dollar when traffic speeds fall outside the optimal range of 45 to 65 kilometres per hour. ERP was raised on the soundbound CTE after Braddell Road (from 7.30am to 8am) and the westbound ECP (from 8.30am to 9am) as traffic speeds were below optimal. MP for Nee Soon GRC Lee Bee Wah asked if the increase in ERP would mean a reduction in road tax, as the ministry has maintained that ERP is meant to manage congestion, not raise revenue. Mr Lui pointed out that there has been more ERP decreases over the past two years than increases, and the ERP rate along CTE between 7.30am to 9.30am has actually gone down, overall. Ms Lee … [Read more...] about No road tax reduction for recent ERP hikes, says Transport Minister Lui
