SINGKAWANG, West Kalimantan: Dressed in a warrior suit and golden helmet, Mr Davis Jhonson held a cutter. To prove that the blade was sharp, the performer used it to slice a plastic cup. However, when he scraped his nose with the knife, there was no bleeding. “I have supernatural powers,” he claimed. Born and bred in Singkawang, a coastal city that is often dubbed the Hong Kong of Indonesia as the majority of its residents are of Chinese descent, the 44-year-old will be performing on Saturday (Feb 8) along with about 1,000 other performers. The Singkawang event is said to be the largest Chap Goh Mei gathering in Indonesia marking the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. It is also significant as an occasion showcasing the culture and tradition of the Chinese diaspora. The highlight of the event is the participation of Tatung, or people who claim to have supernatural abilities. Some even say they can be possessed by spirits. Need a holiday but can’t travel? How to get away while staying in Singapore
SINGAPORE: Seagulls flew overhead as we gazed at a sea view dotted with kelongs and a mangrove island - this was Singapore but not as I know it. Speeding in a half-cabin cruiser, our small group of four were on a boat tour that took us around the northeastern coast of Singapore, cruising by Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong, with a stop at a kelong, or fish farm, partly converted to a floating restaurant. Why the rise of Singapore’s tech giant Sea is making waves in Southeast Asia
The term “unicorn”, used to describe start-ups worth more than US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion), had not even been coined in 2009, when Stanford MBA graduate Forrest Li began working on his new gaming company with nearly a dozen employees – all cramped in a tiny shophouse in Singapore’s central business district. Garena, his fledgling gaming company, kept a low-key profile, though its almost immediate success meant investment rounds and expansion plans came thick and fast. Soon Garena outgrew its small outfit on Maxwell Road, then a move to a two-storey penthouse office beckoned. A decade on, Garena is now one limb of the gargantuan Sea Group. With a market capitalisation of an eye-watering US$137 billion, Sea is bigger than Singapore’s biggest bank DBS, employs 3,000 people in the island republic – its global headquarters – and has operations from China to Japan and Latin America. Its arrival as not just a unicorn, but as one of Southeast Asia’s pre-eminent technology companies … [Read more...] about Why the rise of Singapore’s tech giant Sea is making waves in Southeast Asia
