ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said Tuesday that voting during the upcoming Senate elections on March 3 would be held as “per past practice”. The ECP, in a statement, shared minutes of its meeting that took place after the Supreme Court’s opinion on the presidential reference seeking the Senate polls through an open ballot. Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja chaired an ECP meeting on Tuesday, while the commission's members Justice (retd) Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi, Justice (retd) lrshad Qasir, Shah Muhammad Jatoi, and Nisar Ahmed Durrani attended it. The ECP decided that due to time constraints, the Senate election scheduled for March 3 will be conducted as provided in the Constitution and law as per past practice. “The commission deliberated on the order/opinion of the Supreme Court passed today in Presidential Reference No. 1/2020 and decided to implement it in letter and spirit,” ECP's statement read. Why Sarah McBride Might Be the Most Inspiring Elected Official in America
It’s early January, and Sarah McBride is sitting at a desk in her parents’ house in Delaware. A “Sarah McBride for State Senate” yard sign is wedged between a bookshelf and the wall — already a relic from the election she won two months earlier. “It’s been a whirlwind,” she says, leaning forward and taking off her glasses to rub her eyes. And not just because it’s her first time holding public office: When she won her election for state senator of Delaware’s 1st District with an overwhelming 73 percent of the vote, she became the highest-ranking openly trans elected official in U.S. history. Even on a video call, it’s easy to imagine how she captured three-quarters of her constituents in November. At 30 years old, she’s already well into her second decade in politics. She was 13 when she tagged along on a campaign for the first time, for a friend of her dad’s who was running for Delaware insurance commissioner. At 17, she worked on Democrat Jack Markell’s bid to be governor, … [Read more...] about Why Sarah McBride Might Be the Most Inspiring Elected Official in America

Pangilinan wants Parlade fired after remarks vs INQUIRER.net reporter
MANILA, Philippines — Opposition Senator Francis Pangilinan has called for the relief of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Southern Luzon Command chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. for his recent remarks against an INQUIRER.net reporter. Pangilinan said on Thursday Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzna must also “show Parlade the door” after the latter’s tirades against reporter Tetch Torres-Tupas, over her story on Aetas who supposedly endured torture from the military, and who filed a petition before the Supreme Court (SC). According to the senator, Parlade must suffer the same fate as AFP deputy chief of staff for intelligence Maj. Gen. Alex Luna, who was relieved after blunders on list of supposed former University of the Philippines (UP) students who joined the communist armed movement. “Enough of this unprofessionalism and lack of discipline with such baseless, erroneous public statements. Like AFP Intel Chief Luna, Lorenzana should show Parlade the door,” Pangilinan said … [Read more...] about Pangilinan wants Parlade fired after remarks vs INQUIRER.net reporter

Sterling Brown and George Hill of the Milwaukee Bucks read a statement to the media about the team’s August 26 walkout over the shooting of Jacob Blake. Photo: Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE via Getty Images Of all the moments of the 2019–20 NBA season — the one with Rudy Gobert touching all the mics and the pandemic and the bubble and another Lakers championship — the most lasting one, the most important one, came when the Milwaukee Bucks, in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, elected unanimously not to play their playoff game against the Orlando Magic in order to call for justice for Blake and for the officers to “be held accountable.” It led to the postponement of two days worth of NBA playoff games, as well as games in Major League Baseball, the WNBA, and the MLS. It was something that had always been whispered about but not actually seen in sports in generations: Players recognizing the power of their voices — and simply refusing to play … [Read more...] about The Athletes Have More to Say
