US destroyer docks in Sudan for the first time in decades

· March 2, 2021 ·

PORT SUDAN: A US naval destroyer docked on Sudan's Red Sea coast on Monday (Mar 1) in the latest sign of thawing relations with the United States, a day after a visit by a Russian frigate. The visits are a sign of international competition for influence in Sudan, which sits in a volatile region bridging the Horn of Africa, the Gulf, and North Africa, following the 2019 overthrow of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir. Some 300 marines standing at attention aboard the USS Winston Churchill were greeted by a Sudanese military band in Port Sudan, a strategically important city on the Red Sea that serves as Sudan's main port. Russia plans to set up a navel base there capable of mooring nuclear-powered surface vessels, and on Sunday the Admiral Grigorovich frigate became the first Russian warship to enter the port, Interfax news agency reported. Before Bashir's overthrow, both Qatar and Turkey had signed deals to restore the nearby Red Sea port of Suakin. Second US Navy destroyer hit by COVID-19 outbreak returns to port

· April 29, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: A US destroyer hit by dozens of coronavirus cases sailed into San Diego on Tuesday (Apr 28) for cleaning, making it the second Navy warship temporarily put out of action by the pandemic. With less than half the 300-strong crew tested, 47 sailors aboard the USS Kidd were found positive for COVID-19, the Navy said. Two had been medically evacuated to the US mainland last week and 15 others were subsequently transferred to another vessel with better medical facilities, the USS Makin Island, for monitoring "due to persistent symptoms," it said. The first cases surfaced last week while the Kidd had been patrolling for drug smugglers in the Caribbean. Medical personnel were quickly flown to the ship to conduct tests and it was ordered back to port in the southern California city, where the crew will be evacuated and quarantined and the ship undergoes a "strategic deep-cleaning regimen." The first vessel struck by an outbreak of the disease, the nuclear aircraft … [Read more...] about Second US Navy destroyer hit by COVID-19 outbreak returns to port

Huge Yangtze Dam Destroying Delta

· May 16, 2007 ·

China’s Yangtze River Delta, home to more than 18 million people and a fertile farming area, might be disappearing soon as the Three Gorges Dam siphons off essential sediment upstream, scientists warn. Running from its source in Tibet eastwards across China and emptying into the East China Sea through the delta at Shanghai, the Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and third longest in the world. The Three Gorges Dam was completed earlier this decade to provide flood control and hydroelectric power. At five times the size of the Hoover Dam, it is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. Since the creation of the dam, sediment that would usually flow along with the river and be deposited in the delta is being blocked. A new study, detailed in the May 17 issue of the journal Geophysical Research Letters, found that the dam had retained 151 million tons of sediment since it began operation, reducing the amount of sediment flowing into the delta by about 31 percent. … [Read more...] about Huge Yangtze Dam Destroying Delta

Venezuela criticises US ‘provocation’ after navy operation

· June 25, 2020 ·

CARACAS: Venezuela's defence minister Vladimir Padrino on Wednesday (Jun 24 )called a Tuesday incident in which a US Navy ship navigated near the South American country's coast an "act of provocation." The US Southern Command on Tuesday said the missile destroyer Nitze conducted a "freedom of navigation" operation off Venezuela's coast. The Southern Command said the vessel sailed in an area outside Venezuela's territorial waters - which extend some 12 nautical miles from its coasts - but within an area the Venezuelan government "falsely claims to have control over." Padrino said Venezuela was "not offended" by the act by the country's longtime foe. The United States has imposed sanctions on the OPEC nation's oil sector as part of its effort to oust socialist President Nicolas Maduro, who has overseen an economic collapse and has been accused by Washington of corruption and human rights violations. "It is an empty victory," Padrino said in a speech broadcast on state television, … [Read more...] about Venezuela criticises US ‘provocation’ after navy operation
