President Joe Biden is signing two executive orders Monday to create a Gender Policy Council and review Trump-era changes to college campus sexual assault policies. In a White House statement , Biden said, “Elevating the status of women and girls globally is the right thing to do — it is a matter of justice, fairness, and decency, and it will lead to a better, more secure, and more prosperous world for us all.”” Biden will sign both orders to coincide with International Women’s Day, March 8. According to an administration official speaking on background, the goal of the orders is "restoring America as a champion for gender equity and equality." The first order will create a Gender Policy Council in the White House, building on the White House Council on Women and Girls, an office created during the Obama administration and later disbanded during the President Donald Trump’s administration. National Renewable Energy Laboratory optimistic in face of Trump’s budget cuts
By Peter Marcus , Colorado Politics GOLDEN — The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has 40 years of history behind it, but walking through its sprawling Front Range campus one can’t help but think 40 years into the future. Solar cells that can be spray-painted onto windows or printed at a Home Depot; power grids that can take in a wide portfolio of traditional and renewable energy and adapt to changing environments; homes with appliances that communicate with each other to share power between electric cars, water heaters, appliances and even neighbors; hydrogen cars that can travel 300 miles with only a three-minute charge. Researchers at NREL — a national laboratory that celebrated its 40th birthday on July 5 — have been innovating and contributing to the Colorado and national economy through seven presidential administrations, with the reach of their work only growing each year. But the laboratory’s future is uncertain under President Donald Trump, who has promised to … [Read more...] about National Renewable Energy Laboratory optimistic in face of Trump’s budget cuts
Biden order could change how colleges handle sex misconduct
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order on Monday directing the Department of Education to review policies implemented by Donald Trump’s administration, including changes to Title IX regulations that prohibit sex discrimination in federally funded institutions, according to administration officials. Biden focused on gender equity during his campaign and promised to strengthen Title IX if he won the White House. He also will sign a second executive order formally establishing the White House Gender Policy Council, according to two administration officials who briefed reporters on the plan. Biden’s transition team announced his plans to create the council before he took office. The order directing the review of Title IX could pave the way to a major shift in how colleges handle allegations of sexual misconduct moving forward. Trump’s education secretary, Betsy DeVos, in 2018 rescinded an Obama-era administration standard in cases of reported sexual … [Read more...] about Biden order could change how colleges handle sex misconduct
Lone Star’s Resistance: How Texas is Opening Up, Going After Smugglers & Defending Free Speech
On 3 March, Joe Biden denounced Gov. Greg Abbott's decision to re-open the state and end the mask mandate as "Neanderthal thinking". The governor retorted that it was "not the type of word a president should be using", lambasting the White House for "releasing immigrants in South Texas that have been exposing Texans to COVID". Opening Texas Up The war of words came on the heels of Joe Biden's 26 February visit to the Lone Star State after winter storms that swept across the country between 10 and 17 February put a curb on the state's power, food, and water supplies. Still, it appears that the president has failed to soothe relations with the state's Republicans , who earlier challenged his victory in four swing states – Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin – by filing a suit with the Supreme Court in December, albeit to no avail. Likewise, the Texan governor and attorney general withstood Biden's executive order signed on day one of his presidency stipulating a … [Read more...] about Lone Star’s Resistance: How Texas is Opening Up, Going After Smugglers & Defending Free Speech
Joe Biden Marks International Women’s Day with White House Council on Gender Policy
President Joe Biden will sign two more executive orders on Monday to mark International Women’s Day with a focus on “gender equality.” The president will sign an order to establish a “Gender Policy Council” in the White House to help focus on gender issues such as sexual harassment, equal pay for other genders, ways to combat “gender-based violence,” and “gender equality” issues across the world. In 2019, former President Barack Obama created a White House Council on Women and Girls during his administration to focus on women’s issues. But Biden’s policy council will focus on all issues of gender, not just women’s issues. “This is a matter of human rights, justice, and fairness,” the White House announced Monday. The Biden administration said the council would aggressively work on “intersecting forms of discrimination” including “LGBTQI+” people. From the fact sheet release : The White House Gender Policy Council will be an essential part of the Biden-Harris … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Marks International Women’s Day with White House Council on Gender Policy
