Build it and they will come, believes USA Cricket

· November 25, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Between Dallas and Fort Worth just off the Texas I30 Interstate an American cricket "Field of Dreams" is being built amidst the urban sprawl. Just like the mysterious voice in the Hollywood sport fantasy film that told Ray Kinsella to turn his Iowa cornfield into a baseball diamond, the Chairman of USA Cricket, Paraag Marathe, believes in the saying "build it and they will come". The hope is that the best players, thousands of fans and a global spotlight will come to Grand Prairie's AirHogs stadium after the minor league ball park is transformed into Texas's answer to Lord's, the world's most famous cricket ground. The state-of-the-art 8,000 seat facility will serve as the High Performance Center for USA Cricket, the home of the Texas franchise in Major League Cricket (MLC) when the six-team league starts in 2022, and a venue for top international events. "I have seen cricket played in parks when I am in London. I never thought we would be playing it here but we … [Read more...] about Build it and they will come, believes USA Cricket

Olympics-USOPC will not punish athletes for protests at Olympics

· December 11, 2020 ·

REUTERS: The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said on Thursday it will not sanction athletes for peacefully and respectfully demonstrating in support of racial and social justice. The USOPC's decision came in response to recommendations from an athlete-led council seeking change to Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter which prohibits any kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda. "The USOPC values the voices of Team USA athletes and believes that their right to advocate for racial and social justice, and be a positive force for change, absolutely aligns with the fundamental values of equality that define Team USA and the Olympic and Paralympic movements," USOPC chief executive Sarah Hirshland said in a statement. FBI Pinpoints Suspect in US Capitol Policeman’s Death, Report says

· February 27, 2021 ·

WASHINGTON - The FBI has pinpointed a suspect in its investigation into the death of a U.S. Capitol Police officer in the Jan. 6 attack on Congress by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, The New York Times reported Friday. The Times , citing two unnamed law enforcement officials briefed on the inquiry, said investigators have zeroed in on an individual seen in video footage of the riot who attacked several officers with bear spray, including Brian Sicknick, the policeman who died. Sicknick, 42, was among a vastly outnumbered group of police officers confronted by the mob who stormed the Capitol in a bid to stop Congress from certifying the election of President Joe Biden. The violence led to the impeachment of Trump by the U.S. House of Representatives on a charge of inciting an insurrection, but he was acquitted by the Senate in a trial held after he left office. According to The New York Times , FBI agents began to suspect soon after opening a homicide probe that … [Read more...] about FBI Pinpoints Suspect in US Capitol Policeman’s Death, Report says

Commentary: In Singapore, laws are necessary for trickle-down policies to work

· April 9, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: At one level, the unprecedented three-in-one Unity, Resilience, and Solidarity Budgets demonstrate the resolve of Singapore to ensure businesses and households are helped amid the public health concerns and the economic fallout of the COVID-19 global pandemic. But fiscal resolve alone is not enough. Everyone must play his part. If it’s every person for himself, then we will all be worse off for it. Unfortunately we have already seen some examples of this self-seeking behaviour. Besides being socially undesirable, such behaviour also undermines policies and measures that are targeted at a macro-level but intended to trickle down to all levels of society. LANDLORDS "CAPTURING RENT" For instance, in the Unity Budget unveiled on Feb 18, a S$4 billion Stabilisation and Support Package was created for businesses and workers affected by the evolving COVID-19 situation. Why this Michelin star chef spends so much time on Singapore farms

· July 15, 2019 ·

Recently, Labyrinth hosted a table of local vegetable farmers, giving them the full weight of its Michelin-starred experience. The urban farmers, who tend crops at Edible Garden City, weren’t very much accustomed to fine dining. But they were pretty much the VIPs that night and, in fact, every night at Labyrinth – as they are the people who supply the restaurant with its herbs, flowers and vegetables. When a chef puts food on a plate, it’s the final step in a journey that begins at the source. Many chefs start their day at the market or placing orders online – but for Labyrinth’s chef-owner LG Han, his market consists of farms all over Singapore. From seafood kelongs to a quail farm, a goat’s milk dairy and more, the 34-year-old makes it a point to visit the network of local farmers he works with on a regular basis. That was why it was important to him to have Edible Garden City’s farmers over for dinner – in the spirit of exchange and understanding. Labyrinth is the only … [Read more...] about Why this Michelin star chef spends so much time on Singapore farms
