Tech firms say there’s little doubt Russia behind major hack

· February 24, 2021 ·

WASHINGTON: Leading technology companies said on Feb 23 that a months-long breach of US corporate and government networks was so sophisticated, focused and labour-intensive that a nation had to be behind it, with all the evidence pointing to Russia. In the first congressional hearing on the breach, representatives of technology companies involved in the response described a hack of almost breathtaking precision, ambition and scope. The perpetrators stealthily scooped up specific emails and documents on a target list from the US and other countries. “We haven’t seen this kind of sophistication matched with this kind of scale,” Microsoft president Brad Smith told the Senate Intelligence Committee. Smith said investigators estimate at least 1,000 highly skilled engineers would have been required to develop the code that hijacked widely used network software from Texas-based SolarWinds to deploy malware around the world through a security update. “We’ve seen substantial evidence … [Read more...] about Tech firms say there’s little doubt Russia behind major hack

US senators, tech execs recommend hack reporting requirement

· February 24, 2021 ·

A bipartisan group of senators on Feb 23 recommended that the US consider requiring companies to disclose when they have been hacked. At the first public hearing before Congress since a massive cyberattack by suspected Russian hackers was disclosed in December, Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Mark Warner, a Democrat, was joined by the vice chairman of the committee, Republican Senator Marco Rubio, in calling for the measure. Several others, including Senator Angus King, an independent, also voiced their support, as did several of the tech executives who were testifying. There is currently no federal data breach notification law. “It is time, not only to talk about, but to find a way to take action to impose in an appropriate manner, some kind of notification obligation on entities in the private sector,” said Microsoft Corp president Brad Smith. “I think it is the only way we’re going to protect the country, and I think it is the only way we’re going to protect the world.” … [Read more...] about US senators, tech execs recommend hack reporting requirement

Black Tech Employees Rebel Against ‘Diversity Theater’

· January 3, 2021 ·

In each of the past seven years, major tech companies have released diversity reports, charting the number of women and people of color they employ. The numbers are reported to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, but companies have dedicated more and more resources to publicly displaying their commitments to diversity. The displays are impressive. The results are not. These companies spend millions on targeted outreach and strategic partnerships, but the results change little from year to year. Between 2014 and 2020, for example, the share of Black and Latinx tech workers at Facebook each increased by less than 2 percentage points. It seemed the same story year after year. Until 2020. The nationwide reckoning on race and racism last year exposed what many tasked with diversity work have privately discussed for years: that Silicon Valley’s own diversity and recruitment structures can hinder the work of opening doors to new people from different backgrounds with new … [Read more...] about Black Tech Employees Rebel Against ‘Diversity Theater’

advertisement advertisement advertisement S.B. Divya’s new science fiction thriller, Machinehood , is set in a not-too-distant future when people have access to tabletop biotech labs that churn out everything from cures for new diseases to performance-enhancing drugs. But they find that taking such drugs is all but mandatory as they compete for paying gig work in an economy where more and more jobs can be done by artificial intelligence. advertisement advertisement Before she was a published author, Divya was an engineer with a background in computational neuroscience and data science, as well as computing hardware and software. She talked to Fast Company about how her work has shaped her writing, the not-quite-dystopian world she envisions in Machinehood , and why she’s still optimistic about the future. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. How did your tech career inform your writing? I actually … [Read more...] about Why this AI engineer is using sci-fi to unpack tech’s biggest problems
