Ho Chi Minh City museum to create online exhibition showcasing historic treasures

· February 25, 2021 ·

The Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History is introducing a collection of never-before-seen antiques to the world through an online exhibition. The museum first began developing the exhibition in early February, when administrators realized an online display would allow them to showcase invaluable collections to the public while fulfilling a demand for museum going amongst those too worried to venture into public during the ongoing pandemic. The online exhibit can be found at baotanglichsutphcm.com.vn, where dozens of antiques are on display alongside their full details of origin, initial owners, and value. Hoang Anh Tuan, the museum’s director, said the online exhibition is an experiment in the application of technology to archive management and data extraction. “We have many collections that have yet to be exhibited. This online archive will help us gather information we can use to plan future events,” he said. Ivory seals from the Victor Thomas Holbé collection … [Read more...] about Ho Chi Minh City museum to create online exhibition showcasing historic treasures

Greek ship carrying parts of the Parthenon is giving up more secrets

· February 25, 2021 ·

The latest expedition by divers to the wreck of the Mentor, which sank just off the island of Kythera (also spelled Kithira and Kythira) in 1802, has recovered several pieces of the ship's rigging, coins, the leather sole of a shoe, a metal buckle, a token for playing cards, two chess pieces, fragments of cooking utensils and other seemingly mundane objects. When it sank, the ship was carrying marble sculptures chipped from the badly damaged Parthenon in Athens — later known as the " Elgin Marbles or Parthenon Marbles. These spectacular sculptures — which depict Greek gods, heroes and animals — are now on display at the British Museum in London. Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity

· July 24, 2017 ·

By Michael A. Friedman “Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of personality . I know your anger , I know your dreams . I’ve been everything you want to be. I’m the cult of personality.” — from “ Cult of Personality ” by Living Colour There is something enticing about viewing the world in simplistic all-or-none terms of “good” and “evil.” We love seeing ourselves as righteous and perfect, while viewing those with whom we have conflict as villainous and devoid of moral value. Why get involved in the stickiness of the complexity of human interaction? And often we choose our entertainment based on our desire for this fantasy world. Good guys versus bad guys, cops versus robbers, superheroes versus villains — these are the dichotomies that pervade our cultural landscape. Source: Photo by Travis Shinn Who doesn’t love seeing a bad guy get their due in a television show or movie? And the more intense the retribution, the better – because if … [Read more...] about Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity

Marist United looking for early finish in two-day comp

· February 11, 2021 ·

New Plymouth Marist United (NPMU) has kept the pressure on the other teams after day one of round four of the premier two-day competition. Sitting atop prior to the round, NPMU dominated day one against Woodleigh. Having won the toss and electing to bat first, opener and NPMU stalwart Ryan Fleming anchored the innings with yet another century for the club. Fleming would finish on 126 not out as NPMU posted 285 for three and declared. In reply, the Woodleigh batsmen didn’t find the going so easily as they limped to stumps at 98 for seven with only Jesse Vertongen troubling the scorers with 45. NPMU will look to clean up the tail early on day two and push for the outright. Across town at Western Park it was a similar story with New Plymouth Old Boys (NPOB) in the box seat against Francis Douglas Memorial College (FDMC). Batting first, NPOB posted 295 for eight and declared with Oli Burbidge (92) and Quinn Mills (75) putting on 161 for the first wicket.
