Eddie Jones will talk to Gareth Southgate before confirming England’s policy on WAGs and off-field conduct at next year’s Rugby World Cup. Rugby Football Union bosses were hugely impressed by Southgate’s PR triumph en route to reaching the semi-finals in Russia. Jones’ squad fell short of those heights on tour in South Africa and every effort is being made to raise standards in Japan. “We have been talking to the FA about what they did successfully at the World Cup,” Jones confirmed. “When it gets closer to the time we will have a policy on that (WAGs). We will have an idea and give it to the players to look at. We want them to accept responsibility. Then we will take it from there.” England players abused the trust placed in them by team manager Martin Johnson at the last overseas Rugby World Cup they attended in 2011. The Twickenham suits are not about to tolerate a repeat. RFU chief Steve Brown made a point of saying how … [Read more...] about Eddie Jones to tap into Gareth Southgate’s wisdom over WAGs policy at Rugby World Cup
A famed Harvard geneticist is defending his work on a genetics-based dating app—and distancing himself from Jeffrey Epstein, the science-obsessed pedophile who fantasized about spreading his DNA by inseminating 20 women at a time at his ranch. “The fact that there are people with completely idiotic ideas about genetics doesn’t mean I’m one of them,” George Church told The Daily Beast in a phone interview. “Just because they hung out with me briefly doesn’t mean I bought into their malarkey in any sense, just like geneticists today don’t buy into the eugenics of the 1920s.” Church has had to account for his links to Epstein numerous times since the disgraced money manager was indicted for sex-trafficking and then killed himself in jail last August. Most recently, he was grilled about their relationship during a 60 Minutes profile that included Church’s plans for the dating app, which critics have denounced as a modern … [Read more...] about Harvard Scientist Thinks It’s ‘Ludicrous’ to Compare His Genetics-Based Dating App to Eugenics
Wait: is it really almost 20 years since Terrence Malick stumbled out of the desert and into his comeback? Apparently yes – it was Christmas 1998 when the director released his grandly oblique war movie The Thin Red Line, his first film since 1978. By pure good luck, I was in New York and saw it the weekend it opened, in a cinema humming with the sense of a moment. Back then, this was special. For two decades, no one had thought there would even be another Malick film. The Bigfoot of US cinema had made two unalloyed classics before the age of 35 in Badlands and Days of Heaven, announcing himself as the world’s hottest young auteur. Then he disappeared – or at least quit the movies. Remarkably, given the stakes, the new film was a triumph. Nearly everyone at the sold-out screening was rapt. Nearly. Midway through the three-hour film, a man in the front row got to his feet. “This is bullshit,” he shouted, and began walking out. “Bullshit!” he … [Read more...] about Is Terrence Malick ahead of his time or out of date?
Australia and New Zealand have received a significant boost to their hopes of hosting the 2023 Women's World Cup after two expected bids didn't arrive before the deadline for submissions, leaving the Tasman bid one of only four remaining. Argentina and a joint Korean bid effectively pulled out of the race to host the showpiece event for women's football after failing to submit documents to Fifa on Friday. After South Africa announced its withdrawal from the bidding process earlier in the week, it ensures the 2023 World Cup will be hosted in either South America or the Asia-Pacific region. Australia and New Zealand are up against Colombia, Japan and Brazil as the four remaining candidates confirmed by Fifa on Saturday. South Korea and North Korea caused a stir after announcing their intention to co-host the tournament, despite still technically being at war, but their interest appeared to wane shortly after. Similarly, Argentina announced their desire to host the event, but did not … [Read more...] about New Zealand and Australia one of four bids remaining for 2023 Women’s World Cup
