Nomadland, a US movie about a community of van dwellers traversing the vast American West, won the Golden Lion award for best film at the Venice film festival on Saturday (Sep 12). The film, by US-based Chinese director Chloe Zhao, stars Frances McDormand as a widow in her 60s in a depressed Nevada mining town who turns her van into a mobile home and sets out on the road, taking on seasonal jobs along the way. The festival on the Lido waterfront was the first such event to go ahead in front of live audiences since the COVID-19 pandemic all but shut down the world of showbiz. "Thank you so much for letting us come to your festival in this weird, weird, weird world and way," McDormand said in a video message with Zhao. A few months ago, we had reported that Anu Sithara and Indrajith Sukumaran have started shooting for a family thriller story, titled Anuradha Crime No. 59/2019. A few behind-the-scenes photos from the movie are just out. In the pictures, the characters of the lead actors can be seen doing various scenes, and also interacting with director and the rest of the crew. The film is scripted and directed by newbie Shaan Thulasidharan , along with Jose Thomas Polakkal. It also has Vishnu Unnikrishnan, Surabhi Lakshmi, Top Singer TV show fame Baby Ananya, Harisree Ashokan, Jude Anthony Joseph and Hareesh Kanaran. Braving the normally bitter end-of-February weather — when the international film festival usually takes place — there's always a crowd of die-hard autograph collectors flocking at the corner of the street where actors and filmmakers are dropped off from limousines ahead of their movie's press conference. And before the premiere of a film, fans spend hours waiting to see their favorite stars walk up the red carpet, hoping to get a selfie or simply to soak up the exciting atmosphere of the festival , even if it's freezing outside. REUTERS: Facebook said on Monday (Sep 14) that its users will now be able to watch videos with their friends online using the social media company's Messenger app, enabling them to see reactions in real time. The "Watch Together" feature will allow a user to add up to eight people through a video call and up to 50 people through its videoconferencing tool Messenger Rooms. The company launched the tool in July as it looks to take on Zoom Video communications inc that became a household name driven by the coronavirus-driven boom in demand for its platform. Facebook joins a crowded field of companies rushing to dominate the stay-at-home market as millions of people turn to online platforms to stay connected for work, social life and school amid health concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic.
