SINGAPORE: It’s all too easy to forget that not so long ago, wines from Australia and elsewhere in the New World, including California’s Napa Valley, didn’t enjoy the same prestige they do presently. “It takes time to begin making good wine,” says Wes Guild, an American sommelier who worked for chef Wolfgang Puck for a decade before taking up his current post, running Singapore’s Bistecca and Artemis restaurants. “I don’t think they were making great wine in California coming out of the 1960s,” Guild says. With a few exceptions, the same could be said of Australia. “But with wine, every year you get a new shot at it — and with time and trial and error, after several decades of vintages, hopefully you’ll get it right.” Guild points out the French and the Italians have been making wine for thousands of years, on farms that have been there for generations. They have the benefit of experience. Most of China’s aspiring winemakers, meanwhile, only planted their vines within the … [Read more...] about Commentary: Can China produce grape wine as fine as the French?

Jamie Redknapp and girlfriend Frida Andersson-Lourie snapped sharing sweet kiss in car
Jamie Redknapp appears to be one smitten man. The former athlete, 47, and his model girlfriend Frida Andersson-Lourie, 37, seemed unable to tear themselves away from one another as they put on an amorous display in her car this week. Sport pundit Jamie was snapped sharing the sweet moment with his partner of six-months after she parked her vehicle up in London's Notting Hill as they ventured out to pick up some essential items from a local shop. In photos captured of the father-of-two, he could be seen in the passenger seat before he leant over to plant a kiss on Frida's lips. The pair then got out of the car and walked arm in arm along the pavement. Handsome Jamie cut a smart figure in blue chino trousers teamed with a navy blazer. He covered his nose and mouth with a black face covering when popping inside the shops. Frida caught the eye in a burnt orange blouse that featured on-trend puff sleeves which she paired with skinny jeans and boosted her height in black … [Read more...] about Jamie Redknapp and girlfriend Frida Andersson-Lourie snapped sharing sweet kiss in car

Watchmaker Maurice de Mauriac has a mechanism to avoid supply crunch
ZURICH: Swiss watchmaker Maurice de Mauriac is confident it can find a new supplier for watch mechanisms to maintain production as it battles an industry-wide drop in demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Key supplier Swatch Group has halted deliveries of mechanisms to the small Zurich-based brand, its managers said, after Switzerland's competition authority released Swatch from an obligation to supply other watchmakers this summer. The entire Swiss industry has also seen sales plummet as stores were closed by coronavirus lockdowns and Chinese customers, who often buy watches on their travels, have stayed at home. Still, Maurice de Mauriac, a niche producer which makes about 300 watches per year, has so far got round the supply problems. The company has been using the tiny mechanisms called "movements" it still had in stock and is confident it can get more from a partner still on the customer list of Swatch's mechanism business, ETA. "We have long-term relationships with our … [Read more...] about Watchmaker Maurice de Mauriac has a mechanism to avoid supply crunch
Reflections on My Life as Career Coach
Source: Marty Nemko One career coach reflects on lessons learned, including the centrality of a counselor's ethics and the importance of truly understanding a range of careers. The client base includes many who need help with motivation , and those who will end up self-employed, making these key arenas in which to hone one's coaching skills. Counselors themselves should be self-starters, emotionally stable and willing to broaden their own skill-sets. I’m in my 36th year as a career and personal coach, and I've had the privilege (that's not just a cliche, it's true) of helping more than 6,000 clients navigate a central part of their life. Perhaps it's time to share some candid reflections in hope they might be helpful not just to career counselors and coaches but to other helping professionals as well as to clients. A few observations on ethics I want to start with ethics. The older I get, the more central I am finding ethics to be. I’ve been a little … [Read more...] about Reflections on My Life as Career Coach
