French Fishermen Angered After Destructive ‘Bottom Trawling’ in UK Waters Sabotaged

· February 27, 2021 ·

Activists aboard the Greenpeace ship Esperanza are said to have dropped several large boulders into the English channel in an effort to stop bottom-trawling fishing in a protected area favoured by French boats. The ecological activist group tossed 18 boulders overboard in the channel in order to create a barrier and prevent trawling by fishermen who use a bottom-trawling method to scrape the seabed, which Greenpeace has likened to taking a bulldozer to a national park. According to reports , the area impacted is one used by French ships. The group announced the formation of the “boulder barrier” on Twitter on Friday, and later released a full statement on their website saying, “This barrier will stop destructive fishing in what’s supposed to be a protected part of the ocean. But we’re also here to expose the government’s failure to look after its so-called Marine Protected Areas all around the UK.” “These boulders will deter destructive industrial ‘bottom trawlers’ from … [Read more...] about French Fishermen Angered After Destructive ‘Bottom Trawling’ in UK Waters Sabotaged

Destruction AllStars gets a price drop but you can still get it free before then

· February 26, 2021 ·

Destruction AllStars has dropped its planned price from $69.99 to $19.99, assuming you haven't already claimed it as a free PS Plus game . Developer Lucid Games announced the price change on the PlayStation Blog , framing it as a natural extension of the game's evolution; it was originally going to be released as a standalone PS5 launch game , but was then delayed to launch as a free bonus for PS Plus subscribers. It sounds like a physical release for Destruction AllStars isn't planned, at least for the time being. Sometimes it makes sense to purchase a game outright rather than grabbing it on PS Plus, especially if you plan on letting your subscription lapse (you can only play PS Plus games while you have an active membership, even if you already have them downloaded to your console). But since Destruction AllStars is a multiplayer-focused game, and you need a PS Plus subscription to play online multiplayer, there's little downside to accessing it through your … [Read more...] about Destruction AllStars gets a price drop but you can still get it free before then

Prince Harry calls for more climate change action, suggests COVID-19 is rebuke from nature

· December 3, 2020 ·

Britain's Prince Harry has suggested that the coronavirus pandemic is a rebuke from nature as he called for more action to tackle climate change. The prince spoke during a conversation about the environment with the chief executive of a streaming platform for climate documentaries. "Somebody said to me at the beginning of the pandemic, it's almost as though Mother Nature has sent us to our rooms for bad behaviour, to really take a moment and think about what we've done," Harry said. "It's certainly reminded me about how interconnected we all are, not just as people but through nature. We take so much from her and we rarely give a lot back." Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have spoken out on issues such as race and the environment since stepping down from their roles as working members of the royal family at the end of March and moving to California. The prince, who has been criticised in the past for his use of private jets, urged people to imagine being a … [Read more...] about Prince Harry calls for more climate change action, suggests COVID-19 is rebuke from nature

Kaavan, Pakistan’s lonesome elephant, starts new life in Cambodia

· November 30, 2020 ·

PHNOM PENH: Pakistan's lonely elephant Kaavan arrived in Cambodia by cargo plane on Monday (Nov 30) to start a new life with fellow pachyderms at a local sanctuary, the culmination of years of campaigning for his transfer by A wildlife caretaker feeds Kaavan. Cher was on the tarmac at the airport of Cambodia's second-biggest city Siem Reap to greet Kaavan and was photographed in sunglasses, black face mask and white jacket meeting the vets who accompanied the elephant, who made the long journey in a custom-made crate. Animal rescue organisation Four Paws said Kaavan had another 90 minute drive ahead and would likely arrive at the sanctuary after nightfall, so he would be released in daylight on Tuesday. "Kaavan was eating, was not stressed, he was even a little bit sleeping, standing leaning at the crate wall. He behaves like a Frequent Flyer," said Amir Khalil, a Four Paws vet. "The flight was uneventful, which is all you can ask for when you transfer an elephant." … [Read more...] about Kaavan, Pakistan’s lonesome elephant, starts new life in Cambodia

Sri Lanka digs moat around landfill to keep hungry elephants out

· November 25, 2020 ·

AMPARA, Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka's government is digging a moat around one of its landfills to keep hungry elephant herds out and reduce conflicts between the animals and villagers. Dozens of elephants lumber out of the forest daily into a rubbish dump near the eastern town of Ampara, rummaging through mounds of garbage for wilted vegetable scraps. This has become a common sight at the country's three largest landfills, which are located next to wildlife protection zones. The elephants consume plastic along with the food scraps, which slowly kills them, officials have said. In 2019, a record 361 elephants died mainly because of humans, local environmental groups reported. The Ampara landfill was created around a decade ago in the middle of an elephant corridor that is home to 200 to 300 elephants. Electric fences have not worked to keep the determined animals away. "There is no proper plan or a system for this," said PH Kumara, part of the Gal Oya farmers' committee, a farming … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka digs moat around landfill to keep hungry elephants out
