Coronavirus cases in one county in England has more than trebled in a week resulting in it having the highest infection rate in the country. Data released today by Public Health England shows while there has been a drop in infection rates across England 11 local areas out of the 304 have seen an increase. Rutland in the East Midlands has been named as having the highest rate in England with 199 new cases recorded in the seven days to February 4. This is the equivalent of 498.4 cases per 100,000 people which is more than three times up from 162.8 cases in the seven days to January 28. With 319 new cases Corby in Northamptonshire has the second highest rate but it is down from 501.3 to 441.7. Walsall in the West Midlands recorded 1,258 new cases and is in third place even though its rate has decreased from from 483.4 to 440.7 . UK government allocates money to 42 cinemas The UK government has allocated £650,000 to 42 cinemas in the first awards from their Cultural Recovery Fund for Independent Cinemas, set up to help venues cope with the impact of the pandemic. Cinemas are able to apply for ‘Safety Grants’, to help independent venues meet the additional costs of creating a safe and COVID-secure environment for staff and audiences, and ‘Business Sustainability’ grants of up to £200,000 to help stabilise venues as they reopen. Applications to the fund are open until 30 October. Meanwhile, applications to the Film and TV Production Restart Scheme can be made from 9am on Friday 2 October, though state aid approval is still required for the program. Lovesick boyfriend fined £200 after 200 mile round trip for ‘peck in a Peugeot’
A lovesick boyfriend who drove a 200 mile round trip to meet his girlfriend in a beauty spot was fined £200 for breaching Covid lockdown regulations. The Peugeot driver had decided to make the trip from Lancashire to spend some alone time with his girlfriend, who lives in Leicestershire. He picked her up from home and they decided to head to Staunton Harold Reservoir, near Melbourne, South Derbyshire, where they thought their meeting at the rural spot would not be interrupted. But their moment of passion was lost when police interrupted their private meeting, Staffordshire Live reports. The couple was challenged by patrolling police and fined as the journey was not essential and they were not in a support bubble. The man was sent back home to Lancashire with a £200 fine, and police joked that his "peck in a Peugeot" was not allowed during lockdown. His girlfriend was also fined the same. Police have been told to fine Covid rule-breakers after just one verbal warning in another ramping up of lockdown enforcement, reports say. Officers will 'move through the gears' and charge people £200 if they think a person is flouting the restrictions and they will not go home when asked once. It comes as footage emerged showing three police officers surrounding a woman for allegedly leaving her house more than once in a day. Another four officers appear to arrest a different woman for what she claims was 'sitting on a bench' on the seafront. Meanwhile Priti Patel defended the way police have handed out fines for breaches, stressing there is a 'need for strong enforcement'.
