The EU could prevent more vaccine deliveries from being shipped overseas, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, as the bloc struggles to ensure enough shots for its troubled immunization drive. The Anglo-Swedish pharma giant AstraZeneca is still failing to meet the bloc's delivery targets, Von der Leyen told the Wirtschaftswoche business magazine on Monday. The firm has only "delivered less than 10% of the amount ordered by the EU for the period from December to March," she said. The European Union had expected to receive 100 million vaccines from the company by now, meaning there is a shortfall of about 90 million doses . Italy blocked jabs Von der Leyen's comments come after Italy asked the European Commission, the EU's executive body, to block 250,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from being shipped to Australia last week . Von der Leyen said officials could use these powers again to keep jabs in the bloc. ''That was not a one-off," von … [Read more...] about EU could block more vaccine exports, von der Leyen warns

Coronavirus Cases Increase Globally for First Time in Seven Weeks
The World Health Organization said new coronavirus cases increased globally for the first time in seven weeks, and officials expressed concern that cases could again rise significantly. "We need to have a stern warning for all of us that this virus will rebound if we let it," Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical lead for COVID-19, said Monday at a news briefing at the agency's headquarters in Geneva. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the rise in cases occurred in four regions: the Americas, the eastern Mediterranean, Europe and Southeast Asia. He said the development was "disappointing but not surprising" and said part of the spike appeared to be the result of the "relaxing of public health measures." Michael Ryan, director of WHO's emergencies program, said, "Right now, the virus is very much in control" and it was "unrealistic" to think the pandemic might be stopped by the end of the year. The warnings come after a sharp fall of coronavirus cases and deaths in … [Read more...] about Coronavirus Cases Increase Globally for First Time in Seven Weeks
European Union to Request Coronavirus Vaccine Bailout from Biden: Report
The European Union will reportedly call upon U.S. President Joe Biden to bail out their fledgeling coronavirus vaccination drive, which has seen the bloc seize exports of vaccines to Australia. The European Commission plans to ask the United States to allow the export of millions of U.S.-made doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University to the bloc — somewhat ironically, given its approval of Italy seizing EU-made AstraZeneca doses bound for Australia. The Financial Times reported that the Commission will raise the issue with American officials at an upcoming meeting to discuss transatlantic strategy in dealing with the pandemic. The European Commission told the paper: “We trust that we can work together with the U.S. to ensure that vaccines produced or bottled in the U.S. for the fulfilment of vaccine producers’ contractual obligations with the EU will be fully honoured.” The EU will also be seeking assurances from the Biden … [Read more...] about European Union to Request Coronavirus Vaccine Bailout from Biden: Report
A new chapter in US-EU relations
Leaders of the European Union (EU) are hoping that trans-Atlantic relations will “turn to a new page” during Joe Biden’s presidential term. Over recent decades, the EU and the US have fostered close ties in terms of culture, history, business and defence, but during his tenure, former US President Donald Trump introduced policies “standing outside of the EU” on many international issues, as well as supporting the United Kingdom’s departure from the “European common roof”. Accordingly, the trans-Atlantic relationship between the EU and the US was quite cold and even saw contradictions and tensions at times. However, bilateral ties currently have the prospect of “turning to a new page” with Joe Biden having been sworn in as the 46 th US President. US media reported that as soon as taking over the “hot seat” at the White House, President Joe Biden signed 15 decrees aimed at dealing with existing problems such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and ethnic inequality. The new US … [Read more...] about A new chapter in US-EU relations
