A new genetic variant of COVID-19 surfacing in Britain made headlines earlier this week, with many outlets reporting that it could be 70 per cent more transmissible than the current predominant strain. With the United Kingdom heading into a lockdown and scientists sharing the preliminary facts, the Canadian government announced on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020 a decision to suspend flights from the UK for 72 hours, in step with several other countries. Canada extended the ban yesterday until Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2020. “Genetic variation of viruses such as the one that causes COVID-19 is to be expected and have been previously observed in parts of the world this year,” said a statement from the Public Health Agency in Canada on Sunday. “While early data suggest that the United Kingdom variant may be more transmissible, to date there is no evidence that the mutations have any impact on symptom severity, antibody response or vaccine efficacy.” Dr. Gerald Evans, an infectious disease … [Read more...] about Infectious disease doc weighs in on COVID-19 variant under investigation

Argentine football genius Diego Maradona saw heaven and hell
BUENOS AIRES: World football great Diego Armando Maradona, who died on Wednesday (Nov 25) less than a month after his 60th birthday, was worshipped like a god for his genius with the ball, but his demons almost destroyed him. Maradona had died after suffering a heart attack at his home in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, those close to him confirmed. Argentine President Alberto Fernandez declared three days of national mourning. Rising to stardom from a grimy Buenos Aires slum to lead Argentina to World Cup victory, Maradona was a rags-to-riches story in his football-mad homeland and gained the iconic status of fellow Argentines Che Guevara and Evita Peron. US Peace Corps Marks 60 Years of Global Volunteerism
The U.S. Peace Corps turns 60 Monday. Since its establishment through executive order by President John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961, the Peace Corps has sent more than 240,000 volunteers to 141 countries. The organization quickly became an icon of the idealistic 1960s. The idea for the Peace Corps came during the 1960 presidential campaign when Kennedy gave an impromptu speech on the steps of the University of Michigan’s student union on Oct. 14. During the speech, he asked students if they would be willing to serve their country and the cause of peace by volunteering to work in the developing world. "How many of you who are going to be doctors, are willing to spend your days in Ghana? Technicians … [Read more...] about US Peace Corps Marks 60 Years of Global Volunteerism
