Rohingya: Relocated refugees say life was better at Cox’s Bazar

· January 26, 2021 ·

Over the past several months, Bangladesh has transferred over 10,000 Rohingya refugees to a remote island , despite opposition from international aid agencies. The island, named "Bhasan Char" or floating island, first emerged just 20 years ago as a sandbar in the Bay of Bengal. Experts have questioned whether it is even habitable , as the area is prone to monsoons. In December, Bangladeshi authorities began relocating Rohingya refugees from crowded camps in the southern Cox's Bazar region to the island. Relocation is planned for 100,000 refugees. About 750,000 Rohingya Muslims had to flee from Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh in 2017 after Myanmar's military launched a counterinsurgency operation, involving mass rape, murders and the torching of villages. Bangladesh hosts over a million Rohingya in total, with most of them living in five overcrowded camps in Cox's Bazar. Confusion over cash payments Some relocated refugees say authorities made promises of cash … [Read more...] about Rohingya: Relocated refugees say life was better at Cox’s Bazar

Why India can’t come to Rohingyas’ rescue

· September 18, 2017 ·

Without Myanmar, India can'T engage with any of the Asian nations to its east. IMAGE: Rohingya refugees wait for food to be distributed outside a mosque in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Photograph: Danish Siddiqui/Reuters There are more infrastructure projects connecting India with Myanmar than with any of New Delhi's other neighbours, as the external affairs ministry has discovered. The largest of them -- the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transport Project -- originates from the home state of the persecuted population of Rohingyas. Yet, since each of these projects needs government-to-government support to move even an inch, it is difficult for India to take a strident position without seriously compromising their viability. These projects provide a crucial linkage to keep alive each of India's Look East initiatives. Without Myanmar, India cannot engage with any of the Asian nations to its east, says Prabir De, professor, Asean-India Centre, Research and Information System for … [Read more...] about Why India can’t come to Rohingyas’ rescue

Sesame Street creates Rohingya Muppets to help refugee children

· December 18, 2020 ·

The children’s TV show Sesame Street has unveiled its first Rohingya Muppets to help thousands of refugee children overcome trauma and tackle the impact of coronavirus in the world’s largest refugee settlement in Bangladesh. Six-year-old twins Noor and Aziz Yasmin will feature alongside the show’s famous characters such as Elmo and Louie in educational videos in Rohingya language in the camps, according to Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organisation behind the show. “Noor and Aziz are at the heart of our efforts to bring early education ... to children and caregivers ... impacted tremendously by the dual crises of displacement and the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Sherrie Westin, the president of social impact at Sesame Workshop. “For most Rohingya children, Noor and Aziz will be the very first characters in media who look and sound like them ... [they] will bring the transformative power of playful learning to families at a time when it’s needed more than ever before.” … [Read more...] about Sesame Street creates Rohingya Muppets to help refugee children

Bangladesh moves fourth group of Rohingya refugees to remote, flood-prone island

· February 15, 2021 ·

Bangladesh has sent a fourth group of Rohingya refugees to a remote island in the Bay of Bengal despite criticism from human rights groups. Around 2,000 Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar left Cox's Bazar, where they have been living in the world's largest refugee camp, on Monday. They boarded boats at the port of Chattogram and headed to Bhasan Char - an island 21 miles off Bangladesh's southeast coast, M Mozammel Haque, a commander of the Bangladesh Navy, told reporters. Bhasan Char was only discovered around 20 years ago and has been largely uninhabited since then. It is regularly submerged by monsoon rain but now has flood protections, which the Bangladeshi government insists make it safe. Advertisement Officials have spent more than £80m on building homes, hospitals and mosques there for the Rohingya Muslims, who fled Buddhist-majority Myanmar in 2017. The island has enough facilities to accommodate 100,000 refugees, just 10% of … [Read more...] about Bangladesh moves fourth group of Rohingya refugees to remote, flood-prone island
