Lawmakers, activists remember civil rights icons to mark ‘Bloody Sunday’

· March 7, 2021 ·

Lawmakers and activists marked the 56th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, Ala., through a mostly virtual commemoration – the first without the late civil rights leader John Lewis John Lewis Advocates warn restrictive voting bills could end Georgia's record turnout 'Bloody Sunday' to be commemorated for first time without John Lewis Democrats worry Senate will be graveyard for Biden agenda MORE . The event usually brings thousands to Selma to recognize the 1965 march for voting rights across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which ended with law enforcement officers brutally beating marchers. Images from the day shook the nation and led to support for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This year, advocates honored Lewis, who went on to represent Georgia's 5th Congressional District for decades in Congress, and three other late civil rights leaders, the Rev. Joseph Lowery, the Rev. C.T. Vivian and attorney Bruce Boynton, with wreaths at the bridge. All four … [Read more...] about Lawmakers, activists remember civil rights icons to mark ‘Bloody Sunday’

Dropbox: File storage and syncing service is always evolving

· June 4, 2012 ·

Dropbox is the most widely used and simplest file-synchronization system worldwide not attached to a major technology company. Every machine on which you install Dropbox and use the same account has all the contents synchronized among them by default. Make a change on one machine in the Dropbox folder—remove a file, add one, reorganize items into folders, or save changes—and that change is instantly propagated to every other synced machine. That’s the point of such services, and Dropbox consistently accomplishes this in a nearly invisible manner. Install the software, and an anointed folder is the hub of Dropbox activity. The software offers support for desktop folder sync in Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, and allows mobile access for viewing and for uploading files, images, and video under Android, BlackBerry, and iOS platforms. However, by keeping it minimal and avoiding a full-fledged client—it’s just a menu with a few options—Dropbox requires heavy use of its Web interface for … [Read more...] about Dropbox: File storage and syncing service is always evolving

7 people felt ill after Sinovac shots, Hong Kong officials say

· March 8, 2021 ·

Seven people felt ill after recently receiving their Sinovac shots, including two who had to be put in intensive care, Hong Kong health authorities revealed on Sunday, as the city recorded 16 new coronavirus cases. This means a total of 18 people have sought medical attention after receiving the vaccines over the past week, based on a tally of government data, or 0.019 per cent of the approximately 91,800 people who had taken the mainland-produced jabs so far. Late Sunday, the authorities said three more vaccine recipients had been sent to hospital after taking jabs the day before. All were discharged after treatment. A 53-year-old woman vaccinated at Hong Kong Central Library in Causeway Bay felt dizzy due to hypertension. She was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital on Saturday evening in a stable condition. A 46-year-old also felt dizzy and developed a rash after taking a jab at the Tseung Kwan O Sports Centre. She was sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital in the evening in stable condition. … [Read more...] about 7 people felt ill after Sinovac shots, Hong Kong officials say

Don’t Sabotage Your Professional Print Job

· June 1, 1999 ·

You've been working for weeks on that eye-popping logo your client needed yesterday. Now you amble up to the counter with your Zip disk, ready to place your livelihood in the hands of a service-bureau technician. How can you be sure the graphic that sizzles on screen will look just as good in print? It all depends on what you do before you hand over the disk. As a service-bureau customer, you have the right to see that the job is done well, on time, and at a reasonable price. But you also have a responsibility to learn what it takes to submit trouble-free files. Macworld surveyed a handful of service bureaus across North America to identify the primary causes–and solutions–for common imaging problems. Avoid these mistakes, and you'll reduce the odds of getting an unpleasant surprise when your packet comes back. Our thanks to SpectraComp (Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania), the Printing House (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Indian Rock Imagesetting (Berkeley, California), and Canterbury Press … [Read more...] about Don’t Sabotage Your Professional Print Job

Quirky China: Topless waiters serving hotpot, a company that doesn’t like to work, and lucky day weddings

· March 8, 2021 ·

Topless waiters, a local authority refusing to have staff work overtime so couples can marry on a supposedly auspicious day for weddings, and a company whose name suggests it doesn’t like to work are just some of the quirky stories making the news in China this month. A civil affairs department in southeast China refused requests from young couples wanting to register their marriage on March 14, because it is not a traditional working day. The date this year is seen as an auspicious one for couples to tie the knot because when strung together, the Chinese characters for date 2021314 look like those for “love you my whole life”. The website of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Huaining county, in the southeastern province of Anhui, has seen couples posting online asking for officials to work on that day, despite it being a Sunday. However, it refused the requests and reminded people of the dangers of large crowds congregating during the Covid-19 pandemic. A spokeswoman for the Anhui … [Read more...] about Quirky China: Topless waiters serving hotpot, a company that doesn’t like to work, and lucky day weddings
