The Hanoitimes - Vietnam rushes to prepare manpower in a goal of training 2 million people at vocational schools. The US plan to place tariffs on additional US$300 billion worth of Chinese goods has sparked the relocation of multinational companies from China to Vietnam, and such relocation plans raise the question of what Vietnam acts to accommodate influx of companies in the unpredicted trade conflicts between the world’s largest economies. ADB urges Vietnam to narrow workforce skills gap to remain strong growth
The Hanoitimes - Vietnam should make effort to take use of its young and well educated labor force, said a report of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) launched today. ADB Country Director for Vietnam Eric Sidgwick believes in the country’s strong performance this year, aided by able macroeconomic management, economic growth will spurt in 2018. “Vietnam’s robust economic growth will be driven by vigorous manufacturing and export expansion, rising domestic consumption, strong investment fueled by FDI and domestic enterprises, and an improving agriculture sector,” he added. COVID-19 widens existing gender inequalities: ILO
More than 70 per cent of Việt Nam’s working-age women are in the labour force. Photo ILO Vietnam HÀ NỘI – With a remarkably high labour market participation rate, women in Việt Nam face multiple and persistent labour market inequalities, and carry a disproportionate double burden of work and family responsibilities, researchers have revealed. A new research brief by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Việt Nam shows the COVID-19 pandemic has not only exacerbated existing inequalities but created new gender gaps. More than 70 per cent of Việt Nam’s working-age women are in the labour force, compared to the global level of 47.2 per cent and an average of 43.9 per cent in Asia and the Pacific. While the gender gap in labour force participation is narrower in Việt Nam than in the world, it has still stood at 9.5 percentage points (men’s rate higher than women’s) over the last decade. Taiwan Hails Republican Bill to Formalize U.S. Ties, but Experts See Flaws
The Taiwanese government expressed its gratitude to two Republican congressmen on Tuesday after they introduced a bill to scrap the United States' one-China policy and re-establish formal relations with Taipei. Analysts, however, have raised concerns about the presentation of the text and what appear to be uncertainties surrounding significant terminology in Taiwan policy discussions. House Republicans Tom Tiffany and Scott Perry introduced the non-binding concurrent resolution on Friday. The bill, almost identical to one tabled by Tiffany last September, also calls for the negotiation of a free-trade agreement between Taipei and Washington, as well as support for Taiwan's membership in international organizations. Washington switched formal diplomatic allegiance from Taipei to Beijing in 1979. Interactions with the island nation have been guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of the same year and later the Six Assurances of 1982. Beijing, meanwhile, deems any relationship … [Read more...] about Taiwan Hails Republican Bill to Formalize U.S. Ties, but Experts See Flaws
