The black dust that caked Margaret Gordon’s Venetian blinds was the first bad omen. Her West Oakland neighborhood, criss-crossed by freeways and nestled close to a busy port, was gradually poisoning her lungs, she says. When Gordon moved to an affordable housing complex on 7th and Willow Streets in 1992, she could hear trucks rumbling by throughout the day, shipping goods from the port, crawling along the Interstate 880 underpass and rolling out of the post office parking lot. Gordon was diagnosed with asthma, as were her two grandchildren, who lived in the same building. Respiratory ailments were so widespread among children in the neighborhood that the nurse at Prescott Elementary School carried a shoebox full of inhalers. Two decades later, air pollution still looms near ports and freeways. The transportation sector accounts for 41% of greenhouse gas emissions in California, and 10% derives from heavy trucks, which comprise only 4% of all vehicles on the road. The California … [Read more...] about Heavy trucks are among California’s biggest polluters. Can the state make them go electric?

NEW DELHI: Morris Garages unveiled the electric SUV ZS EV here on Thursday. The car is expected to be launched in January 2020. After the successful run with the connected-SUV, Hector, the marquee UK auto major introduced their first electric car in India. ZS EV’s bold stance and distinctive styling cues make it a head turner. The blacked-out, boat-shaped front grille, which also docks the charging port, is surrounded by a strip of chrome. The creases on the bonnet add aesthetic appeal to silhouette while the headlamp cluster with LED DRLs are sleek in profile. Silver accent has been thrown around the front bumper with a skid plate rounding off the front fascia. The extension of black bumper runs across the side profile. Smaller in size than the Hector, however, EZ EV borrows multiple cosmetic cues, inside out. Dual tone ORVMs with turn indicators, 17-inch alloys, silver-toned roofrail and plastic cladding on the lower half of the SUV, black window line, bottomed by a … [Read more...] about MG ZS EV unveiled in India, launch in January 2020
Efficiency and connectedness are the buzzwords for the 2015 Frankfurt motor show, which opened to the press a couple of days ago and runs until September 27. The pursuit of more miles per gallon, or per battery charge, and the integration of car systems with mobile devices are the most common themes running through the announcements from the major automakers at the biennial bash that fills the vast Messe Frankfurt exhibition halls with the motor industry’s most exciting new metal. But, don't despair: this is Germany, the land of the unrestricted autobahn, so the Frankfurt débuts aren’t all about economy and convenience. There’s plenty of good ol' speed on tap, too. Porsche Mission E Porsche’s Mission E concept is a sports car with a 911-like profile, but with four doors, four seats, and a battery-electric powertrain (yes, this is Porsche’s first fully electric vehicle). Mission E is said to hit 62mph (100km/h) from rest in 3.5 seconds and … [Read more...] about 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show: The world’s motor giants reveal the cars of tomorrow
What if your morning run through a park could generate electricity, which could then charge batteries or maybe even power the phone you’re running with? If you’re wearing the right T-shirt, that might be a possibility. advertisement advertisement Researchers from the University of Málaga in Spain and the Italian Institute of Technology have designed a T-shirt that generates electricity from the temperature difference between the wearer’s body and their surroundings. That means the body heat coming off you when you run, walk, or play a sport—and the difference between that heat and the colder temperature of the surrounding air—could be transformed into thermal power. There are a lot of examples of thermal energy in our lives—the sun warming our atmosphere, a stove burner heating a pot of water to boil. But there are also a lot of examples of wasted warmth, or “waste heat,” which is all the unused heat let out into an … [Read more...] about This T-shirt uses your body heat to generate electricity
WELL, this is a little bit embarrassing. The most eagle-eyed of readers will have spotted this car is a year old. It’s not me being lazy. Promise. It’s Jaguar’s fault. Bosses got their knickers in a twist over the supply of a key component and cancelled last July’s launch to get it fixed. Now the 176mph F-Pace SVR is finally here, I’d get in quick because there’s only a year left of engine supply. Ford currently builds the utterly nutterly 5-litre supercharged V8 for Jaguar at Bridgend but that deal runs out in September 2020. The good news is that Jaguar Land Rover won’t kill off the V8 — it needs it for the F-Type sports car, as much as its pumped-up SUVs — and is currently working through a “shopping list” of other suppliers. I suggest they go and talk to Mercedes-AMG who also look after Aston Martin. Or McLaren engine maker Ricardo. Or BMW. Now let’s talk about the car you see here today.SVR is the performance … [Read more...] about Jaguar’s 176mph F-Pace SVR’s engine is bullet-fast and it’s a smooth ride
