Britain publishes plans to keep internal trade flowing after Brexit

· July 16, 2020 ·

LONDON: Britain will publish plans on Thursday (Jul 16) to keep trade flowing freely between its constituent nations when regulatory powers are reclaimed from the European Union at the end of the year and redistributed to devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. While it was part of the EU, Britain abided by the bloc's rules in areas like agriculture, the environment, consumer protection and employment rights. Now that Britain has left, those powers will be repatriated to the UK. Some will remain with the central government in London, others will be distributed to the devolved nations. Thursday's plan will outline who gets what and how they are overseen. Both the Welsh and Scottish administrations have in the past voiced concern that they will lose out to central government in the distribution. The government said its plan was designed to ensure rules do not diverge within Britain and create barriers to trade - guided by principles of mutual recognition … [Read more...] about Britain publishes plans to keep internal trade flowing after Brexit

Scotland Wants Key Role in Brexit Negotiations in Order to Remain in EU

· July 14, 2016 ·

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, Theresa May was officially sworn as UK’s new prime-minister. Congratulations to the new Prime Minister @theresa_may — despite our differences, I hope we can build a constructive working relationship — Nicola Sturgeon (@NicolaSturgeon) 13 July 2016 Following this appointment Sturgeon offered her congratulations to May in her Twitter account, expressing hope that "despite our differences, we can built a constructive working relationship". "The First Minister highlighted in a number of interviews yesterday that she wants the Scottish Government to be centrally involved in the negotiation process due to the overwhelming decision in Scotland to remain within the European Union, and again she reiterated that all options are on the table when it comes to keeping Scotland in the UK," Greg Maxwell said. Also on Wednesday, the Scottish leader held a press-conference where she stated that Brexit "does not apply to Scotland, as Scotland voted … [Read more...] about Scotland Wants Key Role in Brexit Negotiations in Order to Remain in EU

PM Johnson says Britain was not influenced by Russia in Brexit vote

· July 22, 2020 ·

LONDON: Prime Minister Boris Johnson rejected on Wednesday (Jul 22) any suggestion that Britain's vote to leave the European Union had been influenced by Russian interference. A day after a report by parliament's intelligence and security committee said the government had failed to try to find out whether Russia had meddled in the Brexit vote, Johnson's government doubled down on its refusal to launch a review. Instead, the government said it had taken measures since the review, which was completed in March last year, and would bring forward legislation to counter "hostile state activity" to deal more effectively with the espionage threat. "The people of this country didn't vote to leave the EU because of pressure from Russia or Russian interference - they voted because they wanted to take back control," Johnson told parliament, describing the criticism as being led by those lawmakers who voted to stay in the EU at the 2016 referendum. "It is the UK that leads the world in … [Read more...] about PM Johnson says Britain was not influenced by Russia in Brexit vote

UK ramps up no-deal preparations as Brexit poker begins

· September 8, 2020 ·

LONDON: Britain went into Tuesday's (Sep 8) fresh round of Brexit trade talks with a warning to the European Union that it was ramping up preparations to leave without an agreement as both sides bickered over rules governing nearly US$1 trillion in commerce. Britain left the EU on Jan 31 but talks on new trade terms have made little headway as the clock ticks down to an October deadline for a new deal and then the end of the status-quo transition arrangement in late December. As diplomats try to gauge whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson is blustering or serious about allowing a tumultuous finale to the four-year Brexit saga, his chief negotiator said yet again that Britain was not afraid of a no-deal exit. That prospect scares business and weakened the British pound on currency markets. "We have now been talking for six months and can no longer afford to go over well-trodden ground. We need to see more realism from the EU about our status as an independent country," David … [Read more...] about UK ramps up no-deal preparations as Brexit poker begins

Johnson lashes out at EU as he clears first hurdle for Brexit treaty breach

· September 14, 2020 ·

LONDON: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday (Sep 14) a bill that would break international law by breaching parts of the Brexit divorce deal was needed because the European Union had not taken a "revolver off the table" in trade talks. Johnson accuses the EU of threatening to use the withdrawal treaty agreed in January to put up trade barriers between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland, and even to impose a food blockade, the latest brinkmanship of a four-year saga since Britain voted narrowly to leave the bloc. The EU says Johnson's plan would wreck trade talks and propel the United Kingdom towards a messy Brexit. A derivatives industry source said on Monday the European Commission had delayed a decision on euro clearing, ramping up the pressure. READ: EU warns Britain its international credibility is at stake in Brexit row As Britain's House of Commons began debating the Internal Market Bill, which the EU has demanded London scraps by the end of … [Read more...] about Johnson lashes out at EU as he clears first hurdle for Brexit treaty breach
