Tennis: Osaka aims to inspire new generation – but says Williams is still the queen

· February 21, 2021 ·

MELBOURNE: Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka said she felt comfortable being a role model for the next generation after her fourth Grand Slam victory solidified her position at the forefront of a new era for tennis. But the Japanese star, a four-time major-winner at the age of just 23, insisted America's Serena Williams, 39 - who has 23 Slam crowns - remains the face of the women's game. Osaka beat America's Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3 in the Australian Open final on Saturday (Feb 20) to win her fourth Slam from the last eight in which she has played, and extend her year-plus winning streak to 21 matches. She joins Monica Seles and Roger Federer in winning her first four major finals, and will move up to second in the world rankings. Her sweeping triumph was viewed as heralding a shift in women's tennis with Australia's Fed Cup captain Alicia Molik declaring it a "changing of the guard", while the New Yorker said Osaka was the "most thrilling athlete of her generation". … [Read more...] about Tennis: Osaka aims to inspire new generation – but says Williams is still the queen

Osaka edged a tight first set and broke the American twice in the second to win 6-4, 6-3 in 77 minutes in front of thousands of fans at Rod Laver Arena. Third seed Osaka preserves her 100 per cent record in Grand Slam finals after winning the 2018 and 2020 US Opens and the 2019 title in Melbourne. "We played in the semis of the US Open a couple of months ago and I told everyone that you're going to be a problem," Osaka told Brady at the trophy presentation. "And I was right. It's really incredible to me to see your growth over the past few months, it's really cool for me to see." The 23-year-old, who becomes only the third player after Monica Seles and Roger Federer to win their first four major finals, will now rise to second in the world rankings. · February 26, 2021 ·

A mother and son who split winnings from their weekly lottery tickets and scratchards have scooped £100,000-a-month for a whole year Sue Rees, 48, and her son Connor, 24, buy two Scratchcards every time they go shopping together. Until recently, their biggest win had been £150 - but their luck changed when they bought a scratchcard that landed them the epic jackpot prize. Connor, a warehouse worker, and Sue, a dinner lady who has helped prepare meals for needy children during the pandemic, said they couldn't believe their eyes when they looked at the card - before heading right back to the shop to check it with the cashier. Connor said: “Mum has always been convinced she’d win the lottery one day but I’m a bit more sceptical and never thought it would happen. "We took the Scratchcard straight back into the shop and the shopkeeper confirmed we’d won big, we just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t really!" Following their tradition, the pair will split their winnings … [Read more...] about Mum and son who split winnings on weekly lotto tickets scoop £100k-a-month for a year

Myanmar protesters stage biggest rallies since troop deployments

· February 18, 2021 ·

YANGON: Myanmar's anti-coup protesters returned to the streets in force on Wednesday (Feb 17), staging the biggest demonstrations since troops fanned out around the country to quell opposition to the new military government. Much of the country has been in open revolt since the army deposed Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's government at the start of the month and charged her under an obscure import law. Tens of thousands rallied in Yangon, some blockading roads with vehicles to stop security forces from moving around the nation's biggest city. "We have to fight until the end," Nilar, a 21-year-old student who asked not to use her real name, told AFP. "We need to show our unity and strength to end military rule. People need to come out on the streets." In the second biggest city Mandalay, police and soldiers broke up a protest that had blocked the railway, two sources told AFP. Yan Naing, a member of a local emergency rescue service, said security forces opened … [Read more...] about Myanmar protesters stage biggest rallies since troop deployments
