ROSS GIBLIN/STUFF The Police Memorial Wall is a place for reflection on the lives of police officers slain on duty. A phone call from Rowan Carroll has often left people overwhelmed, in disbelief and in tears. But sometimes her cold-calls have reconnected out-of-touch families and led to people discovering things they never knew about their relatives. Carroll, the director of the New Zealand Police Museum, is tasked with poring through historic birth, and hospital records, newspaper archives and coroners’ reports, to unearth the names and stories of every officer killed in the line of duty since the police was formed in 1886. Her mission is to track down the next-of-kin and relatives, to ask their permission to commemorate them on the memorial wall, at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua.
