ORLANDO: Donald Trump told conservatives on Sunday he was considering running for president again in 2024, as he reasserted dominance over the Republican Party and warned of a “struggle” for America’s very survival. Echoing the grievance politics of his 2016 campaign and the harsh rhetoric of his one-term presidency, the 74-year-old fired up an enthusiastic crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando. In a keynote speech — his first since leaving the White House on January 20 — he repeated his false claims that he won the election instead of President Joe Biden, and hammered establishment Republicans who voted against him in the latest impeachment drama. But while he teased his future plans, he left the crowd guessing about whether he will challenge Biden in a rematch. “With your help we will take back the House, we will win the Senate, and then a Republican president will make a triumphant return to the White House — and I wonder who that will be?” Trump … [Read more...] about Donald Trump teases 2024 run

Prof’s fear of pronoun punishment is all too plausible: DiManno
I don’t want to be mean. I don’t want to be crabby. I don’t want to be scornful and sarcastic. It’s all too easy to slip into each of those states of commentary when addressing the weekend forum at University of Toronto, featuring psychology Professor Jordan Peterson as the antichrist and two very hostile opponents, on the subject of gender-gerrymandered pronouns. They do make it damn near irresistible to mock, however, particularly at an event which began with the dean of arts and sciences offering an obsequious tribute to the indigenous people who once occupied the land beneath our feet and an oh-so-coddling assurance from the moderator that “support” was available just outside for anyone, you know, traumatized by the discussion. (“Trigger warnings” is the contemporary argot on campuses across Canada and the United States, with some offering “safe zones” to shield students — delicate creatures that they apparently are — from lecturers and guest speakers who might provoke anxiety … [Read more...] about Prof’s fear of pronoun punishment is all too plausible: DiManno
Piers Morgan blasts ‘cowardly’ government for ‘not having the guts’ to stand up to Saudi Arabia
Piers Morgan took aim at the government's "cowardly" action to slash aid to Yemen - but not take sanctions against Saudi Arabia following reports on the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng appeared on Good Morning Britain today and was initially questioned on the vaccine roll-out and the missing person with the Brazil coronavirus variant. But the questioning soon turned to the UK government's decision to cut aid to war-torn Yemen by more than half, alongside the decision not to issue sanctions to Saudi after a declassified US intelligence report into Khashoggi's murder in 2018 concluded that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved an operation to "capture or kill" the journalist. Defending the government's decision, Kwarteng referred to the US response: "They haven't specifically ruled out having sanctions because they realise that the way to influence Saudi Arabia isn't simply to cut off-" "Hang on," Piers interjected. "I think that's … [Read more...] about Piers Morgan blasts ‘cowardly’ government for ‘not having the guts’ to stand up to Saudi Arabia
US to impose sanctions on Russia for Navalny poisoning: report
US President Joe Biden's administration is preparing to impose sanctions on Russia for the poisoning and imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny, CNN reported Monday. Citing two administration officials, CNN wrote that the United States will coordinate with the European Union to determine what the sanctions will entail and their exact timing. According to one official, a potential option is an executive order that would trigger sanctions on Russia for repeated attacks on US democracy, including the SolarWinds cybersecurity hack and placing bounties on US soldiers in Afghanistan, CNN wrote. The sanctions would be Biden's first on Russia, and would be a marked departure from his predecessor Donald Trump's approach to dealing with Moscow. Trump was notoriously friendly towards Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and often declined to penalize Russia for its actions. The European Union approved sanctions on four senior Russian officials earlier Monday, as UN human rights … [Read more...] about US to impose sanctions on Russia for Navalny poisoning: report
Tech, cross-border activities set to drive Asia M&A in 2021
Coronavirus-spurred growth in the technology sector will help drive merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the Asia Pacific this year, bankers and lawyers predict, with the potential easing of Sino-United States tensions likely to revive outbound investment. Deals involving Asia Pacific firms totaled US$1.2 trillion in 2020, up 12 percent from 2019. Seven of the year’s 10 largest transactions were announced in the third quarter, which in total accounted for 40 percent of the year’s deals by value. High technology and telecommunications companies surged to a 23 percent share of deal value, up from 14 percent last year, while retail and consumer products and services firms also reported growth. “COVID has dramatically accelerated digitalization, e-commerce and fintech,” said Jung Min, co-head of M&A at Goldman Sachs in Asia, excluding Japan. “Companies that have benefited are now suddenly much larger in size and financial scale, creating significantly more potential to … [Read more...] about Tech, cross-border activities set to drive Asia M&A in 2021
