Cross Island Line to take direct route under Central Catchment Nature Reserve
SINGAPORE: The Cross Island Line (CRL) will take a direct route under the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (CCNR), the Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced on Wednesday (Dec 4). This comes after years of debate and consultation over the routes Singapore’s longest MRT line would take. Nature groups and environmentalists had previously raised concerns that the direct route - which will include a 2km tunnel under the CCNR - could have an impact on Singapore's wildlife and nature. The other route considered was a 9km stretch skirting the reserve and going under homes and businesses. File photo MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered a stop to mining activities in Tumbagaan Island in Tawi-Tawi’s Languyan municipality, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Tuesday. Nograles bared that Duterte expressed concern over the island during the full Cabinet meeting held on Monday. “The island has, at this point, been mined up and while rehabilitation efforts are underway, the President is issuing a directive to stop any and all mining in Tumbagaan Island and to step up the rehabilitation of the area by planting more trees and other efforts of rehabilitation,” Nograles said in an online briefing. 22 people taken to hospital after accident between bus and car on Jurong Island Highway
SINGAPORE: Twenty-two people were taken to the hospital after a car and a bus collided on Jurong Island Highway on Sunday (Dec 6) morning. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a road traffic accident along Jurong Island highway at about 7am on Sunday. The accident happened towards the end of the highway, said the police. Twenty-one bus passengers, all men, were taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and National University Hospital (NUH), said the police. The driver of the car, a 42-year-old man, was also conscious when taken to NUH. All of them were conscious when taken to hospital, said the police. SCDF said eight people were taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, 11 people to NUH and three people to SGH. Video circulating on social media showed a bus toppled on its side and the front half of the car crushed. Discovering Singapore on foot: Highlights of a 5-day walk around the island
SINGAPORE: It was a walk to remember. On Friday (Oct 16), CNA journalists Matthew Mohan and Gaya Chandramohan completed their long journey around Singapore, which saw them clock 140km over the space of five days. They kicked off their walk at 6am on Monday from Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre and returned there at 2pm on Friday. Their goal? To rediscover the parts of the island that they had otherwise forgotten about and uncover new hidden treasures, some of which people might not know about. After all, with limited opportunities for overseas travel because of COVID-19, discovering what is on your doorstep is the next best thing. This is Matthew Mohan's account of the five-day journey.
