DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania - At least 16 people died and 253 were injured in a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck northwest Tanzania and was felt throughout the Great Lakes region, local authorities said Sunday. As rescuers scrambled to find survivors from Saturday's quake, Tanzanian premier Kassim Majaliwa headed to the worst-hit city, Bukoba, to attend a ceremony at its stadium. "This tragic event is unprecedented. We've never known this in our country," he told mourners. "The government is with you. It will not abandon you." President John Magufuli, who is from the region, said he was "deeply saddened". Tanzania earthquake toll climbs to 14 dead, 200 injured
Dar es Salaam - A 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck northwest Tanzania, close to Lake Victoria and the borders of Uganda and Rwanda, has killed at least 14 people and injured 200, local authorities said Sunday. As rescuers scrambled to find survivors from the Saturday quake in the worst-hit town Bukoba, premier Kassim Majaliwa headed there to attend a mourning ceremony at its stadium. President John Magufuli, who is from the region, said he was "deeply saddened." Bukoba's district commissioner Deodatus Kinawilo, said "so far 14 people have been confirmed dead and 200 injured. BANGKOK: Thailand reported 143 new coronavirus infections on Monday (Feb 15) and in quarantine detected its first case of the highly contagious COVID-19 variant first found in South Africa, its coronavirus taskforce said. Two new deaths were reported, taking fatalities to 82, with overall cases at 24,714, the majority of which have come in the past two months. OSLO: Norway's Equinor is looking to sell more assets in the United States and exit several other countries as part of a major global reshuffle as it tries to return to profit after writing down US$25 billion of U.S. assets over the past decade. While the company, like other energy majors, has been hit by last year's fall in oil and gas prices, Equinor's new head of international business, Al Cook, said it lacked scale in the U.S. shale market and had underestimated the strength of local competition.
