EU agrees to sanctions on Myanmar coup, Russia crackdown

· February 23, 2021 ·

BRUSSELS: European Union foreign ministers on Monday (Feb 22) agreed to impose sanctions on Russian officials for the jailing of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny and to target Myanmar's military over its seizure of power, the bloc's top envoy said. The EU will press on with sanctions against Myanmar's military over its coup this month, and will also withhold some development aid. "We took the political agreement to apply sanctions targeting the military responsible for the coup and their economic interests," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said. "All direct financial support from our development system to the government reform programmes is withheld." The military ousted and detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup that has drawn international condemnation - and it has launched an increasingly bloody crackdown on demonstrators. Borrell insisted the bloc would not curb trade ties with the country as that could hit the general population. One hundred years of the Alexander Turnbull Library

· February 26, 2021 ·

Scraps from an Egyptian book of the dead, Sumerian clay tablets, a Japanese songbook and hand-sewn buttons created by 19th Century prisoners are on display at a new exhibition celebrating the Alexander Turnbull Library’s centenary. Mīharo Wonder , which opens at the National Library this weekend, was originally supposed to be on show last year but was pushed out due to Covid-19. The 170 pieces which make up the exhibition are a sample of the more than 4 million items in the library’s entire collection. “We played with the idea of the library as a catchment, and these [items] being anchor-points with the intersecting web of connections and cultures,” said co-curator Fiona Oliver. The vaccine rollout is going slower than in other countries like the US and the UK, and the spread of virus variants is on the rise, most notably the more contagious B.1.1.7 British mutation. Lockdowns less popular "All the data and surveys so far show that a large majority still follow the rules," Rolf van Dick, professor of social … [Read more...] about COVID: Germany in lockdown lethargy
